The detail level is intense. Everywhere I look on the car, it looks like it’s two years in to its development cycle as opposed to a new design. Those turning vanes and bargeboards are impressive. It’s interesting to see that Mercedes haven’t gone with the shark fin. Also, it looks like Mercedes have gone more aggressive with their S-duct than teams previously have been able to. I wonder if the extra 200mm on the nose is allowing them to make a less swoopy S and exploit the effect more.

In a followup to the discussion about the VJM10 though, supposedly the launch car we saw yesterday really is the car they’re taking to Barcelona, which is odd. The step’s unfortunately here to stay because the maximum height of the vanity panel has been reached. This also makes me think they’re nixing the S duct which puts them in the company of Sauber as the only teams to be not running it. While I’m still fascinated by the nose solution and curious about how their sail’s going to work, I’m now a bit worried. I guess we’ll have a better idea of what’s going on next week.

They’re gonna test the fin after the reveal. And I agree with all this.

Do you think it’s a little too long, though?

Long F1 car is long.

Yes, I do think they’re too long, and I’m not a fan of the wings all being slanted back. It’s supposed to make it look fast when it’s stopped, but to me it makes it look like someone squished the pics into a rhombus, but that’s all whatever. While I appreciate a beautiful car like the Jordan 191 or an MP4/4, I’m more interested in watching the engineering than anything.

That length makes me wonder how they packaged the power unit and fuel cell. It must be all inline—that doesn’t look like super-compact at all.

You make a bold claim even though the RedBull has yet to be released....

I find the new Merc underwhelming in its design. maybe the team has perfected it so well that they don’t have to go as extreme to the specifications this year.

That’s how every F1 car’s been packaged since the 70s though and fuel tanks are way smaller now than they’ve been at any point apart from during the refueling era. The packaging would be alot easier this year since they have more bodywork to be able to work with, but the same cooling requirements.  There’s going to be less of a compromise there between aero and cooling, which is part of why all of the sidepods we’ve seen so far are so dramatically tapered. The increased length this year is entirely the regs which require the slanted back wings and longer nose. I remember reading something about a regulation change mandating that the battery and electronics for the ERS be situated below the fuel tank, but I don’t remember if that was this year or last year and IIRC every team bar Red Bull were already packaging it this way, so it shouldn’t have much of an effect on the overall grid.

Well they still have to try.

I do like how Lewis Hamilton is sitting on it like “Yeah we’ve already won, I just came from the future to tell you all!”
