What would it take for crossovers to be acceptible? I mean purely from an on-road stand point. Is it the name? What if we said you were shopping for a “Highside” for your new daily or a “Fullbody” for the family? How about those 4-Door Coupe Crossovers simply getting the designation of being a “Slopeback” and leaving fastbacks, hatchbacks, and liftbacks alone? BMW X4 is a pretty vicious.
I’m not saying we should be an all CUV society or anything, I’m just saying they make perfect sense as a default vehicle. It’s not like US households own one vehicle and even the ones that do would be better served by a Cayenne than a Panamera...*cough cough* Who said that?! KILL THE HERETIC!!!
If you are an Oppo that owns a crossover can you really see being a one vehicle household and NEEDED to buy new could you really see choosing the sedan over the CUV when there isn’t a wagon option present?

Being cool means it excels greatly at one thing while failing at others. Doing everything pretty well isn’t “cool” it’s mediocre. That’s not necessarily a bad thing in a car. It makes them practical. However, it will never make them cool.

Good visibility and rational design would go a long way toward making crossovers cool. Less Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, more unibody Nissan Pathfinder (R50, 1995-2004).

I’ve given this some thought, and CUVs need their own stock car racing series. Manufacturers pretty much have the classes setup for us (i.e. CR-V vs. RAV4 vs. Rogue; Pathfinder vs. 4Runner vs. Durango; etc.), and the rules would be simple:
Stock cars with limited modifications - only the stuff regularly needed for proper racing, like adjustable suspension, proper brakes, different fluids
Due to adjustable suspension, cars would have minimum ride heights, the baseline being the car’s factory ride height minus a percentage/value so that it can be lowered a tiny bit
No drivetrain mods whatsoever
Rollcages would be necessary, and the cars can be stripped of excess weight
Since these are “utility vehicles” the races could be Rallycross style events, although I would also want proper class-racing (i.e. Premier class for the premium performance CUVs, Mini class for the small cheap CUVs, etc.) kind of like how endurance racing has different classes
I think that sets a good framework for racing. Cheap to run, it’ll look ridiculous at first but I think it’d be touring car racing for the current era. We’d have a great mix of manufacturers since every company makes a CUV. I think that the great thing about touring cars (and sports car racing, to a degree) is that these are cars you can see every day or may very well be your family car.
Anyways, I think this would make CUVs cooler but it’s a ridiculous idea.

Well, it can be good at everything but still do this one thing in a crazy/exciting/weird way to make it cool.
For example - the M3 sedan is cool. It does everything just fine, but it does speed and handling particularly well.

Look at the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution.
I think it’s the greatest CUV/SUV of all time, mostly because it’s the greatest Dakar rally raider of all time.
The ultimate test for a crossover and SUV, then, is not the Nurburgring, but South America and Mexico.

But most sedans are decently versatile. M3 just happens to be that and really fast, which makes it cool in my book.
