My five-year old nephew is coming to visit this weekend and I totally used it as an excuse to buy a Lego train set and a bunch of spare tracks. Y’know, for him to play with. I’m suuuuuper excited and NO HE CANNOT TAKE THEM HOME WITH HIM. My wife thinks that makes me an asshole (hint: I AM).

Dude just buy the kid another set ... and tell him to bring it over when he visits. Top-tip: get a different train type and more sets so you can build a whole diorama Lego town. Let the blocks take over ... you know you want to!

imo it’ll change the whole experience for nephew if he gets his Very Own Brand New Set that he can build and do with what he wants. Ownership (not just of the set, also of his experience) will have him invested in a totally different and deeper way.
imo you’ll have a better experience too. Even the most conscientious 5-year-olds have limited motor skills, dexterity, fine motor control, and grasp of cause and effect. A 13-year-old would need to be at the top of his game to be able to reliably protect that beautiful elaborate setup you got there. And even then...
Also, 80% of the Lego fun for our boys seemed to be when they did the initial assembly.
Enough free priceless advice lol

PS if you decide to get a set for your nephew maybe be sure to check the age guidelines. 5-year-olds may be younger than you’re thinking. He must be a pretty special little guy!
