Kinja'd!!!

Here’s the shocker: since they handed tag stuff off to a private contractor *not* in the horrible main office, tag and title were... nice. No real waiting, professional.

My NC local (subcontracted) dmv even sells reasonably priced cup cakes while you wait. A far cry from NY DMV.

There could have been cupcakes. I didn’t note any. This was Asheville/Hendersonville Road. They *did* have a gumball machine, but cupcakes win out.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s twoo, it’s twoo!

I even went to Barnes & Noble afterward to pick up a couple of books and a season of Columbo.

I went into the movie section for that, and I wanted a copy of Heat, Zulu, The House on Haunted Hill, Metropolis, and/or a couple of others. Sadly, I pretty much struck out across the board. Started with the Columbo grab, ended with just the Columbo and North by Northwest. Copies of M and some other Fritz Lang pieces were... pricey (yes I know Criterion but still), as was the copy of Operation Petticoat. And speaking of Blake Edwards, forgot to look for S.O.B. Oh well.

Haven’t seen this in years. Now, I may have to go get S.O.B for myself. Sadly, I don’t think my wife will watch it with me.

Ah well. I don’t often go to B&N anymore unless someone gives me a gift card. For some reason, although I’ve never minded paying full price for books, I have an aversion to full price for CDs or DVDs.

I do like to sit and look at books, but I am gravitating more to the new library branch nearby lately.

I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I love Beetlejuice.

Visits to the department of motor vehicles - stereotyped as unpleasant, awful. I just had one, and mine was not. Second image is a doll of the director M Night Shyamalan saying “what a twist!”. A memetic joke on surprising if stupid twists to stories, a la Shyamalan’s movie directing tendencies and from the animated-doll TV show Robot Chicken.

It depends upon the DMV office. In California, the DMV office in Hayward, may be the worst DMV anywhere in the country. Drive half an hour to Concord, and it’s 180 degrees out. Best bet: Triple-A. They can’t do everything, but for the things they can do, it’s a better experience.

A large part of things is that the old office was very overloaded in the handling of license *and* tag issues, is located in a relatively low-rent mall, with poor crowd managing and occupied by the sorts that would put the postal service to shame in defining being a “desk occupant”. The tag office has been separated from the license office and privatized, in a newer location which is well organized. The contrast is stark.

Interestingly, it doesn’t seem to have much to do with local income, etc. etc. The next county’s tag and license office is better organized, with better people, practices, and so on despite higher poverty and an apocalyptic level of drug use.

Here’s another shocker, my local DMV office, a regular state of Illinois office (state slogan: give us your money and shut up), is staffed full of friendly people who are rather good at their jobs. We have the option to renew registration online, but I don’t even bother, I just go into the office.

I renew online and recently replaced a license online because there’s fundamentally nothing wrong with the website and the DMV is a 20 minute+ drive away. I’ve never had to work with a *good* DMV office like today, so it was something of a new experience.

Also, I’ve received the impression that a lot of Illinois is fundamentally sound and would just like to wall off most of Clark County... Not surprising that some local staffing would reflect that.

Haha, you mean Cook County? That’s the county Chicago is in. A lot of people do feel that way, but really the bulk of the state government is corrupt and useless. How my DMV got good must just be a case of good local management.

Sorry, yes, meant Cook. The *other* hilariously criminal single-syllable-starting-’C’ county famed outside its own state sneaked past my brain filter.
