Losing ground to the snow

Might not see the dirt in my yard until July if this keeps up. We got just over 3 feet (maybe 4) this last weekend with another 27-30" coming this weekend. Which means I only have a few days to dig out before it happens again. My garage is the only side of the house that is cleared....or was cleared.

The Jetta isn’t moving for a while....nor is the Mustang it’s blocking in the Garage....maybe that makes the world just a little be safer.

This is in Incline Village NV, on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe at about 7200ft above sea level. I think we’ve seen about 30ft of snow so far this year at my house. The Ski resort 5 miles away is reporting 636" of snow fall this season so far...they are also about 1000ft above us.

I start with a beer.....then maybe another. Then I find a shovel and fire up the snow blower. First you snow blow a path to move around in then the driveway. After that you shovel all the snow into the drive way so you can blow it out....this will take several days after work...then the next storm comes and we start over agian ....I also pay someone to clear my drive way with a big trackless tractor and blower they only come once a day and we avg 2-4in an hour so being able to clear it yourself is a must. Anything over 18" and I might get my subbies stuck... depending how heavy the snow is.

Also it should be noted I’ve given up on most entrances to my house. The front of the house with the garage is the only side that’s not buried past the first story.

These aren’t snow drifts the roof of my house does shed to the side but the snow in the yard is easily 12ft deep maybe more. I haven’t seen my 6ft fence in over a month.

Not sick of it yet. We don’t call people locals around here until they’ve lived through a winter like this and stayed.

I belive you are correct,I had it dug out before this last storm....time to do it agian The snow that slid from the other side isn’t helping. My deck is first on my list today then the jetta tomorrow.

You sound like me. The best part is we don’t salt the roads around here and most roads have a nice 1-3in of packed snow on them......Every turn get’s a little be of tasteful over steer......and some get a full on drift.

Oh how I wish... Th problem here is we get a nice layer of ice built up and then if you get a little drift on you end up in a tree/ditch/mailbox/front yard/a BMW or Infiniti that should not have been out and got stuck in the middle/side of the road.

Good grief! I was in Tahoe City for the long weekend and the amount of stupidity trying to get out of there was unreal! I’d be horrified to live there. I’d never leave the house. Sure is pretty, though! And skiing was great.

It ended up taking nearly 10 hours to get back, 6 of which were spent on the first 20 miles. Witnessed a mid-90s Mustang with low profile tires and no chains crawl along with traffic for over two hours (how long it took to cross Truckee), having to rock back and forth to get unstuck every time we moved. Thankfully they’d set up chain control right on the on-ramp and they got turned around.

Still plenty of assholes blocking the highway, though. Hello beached RWD Model S on summer tires with a CHP Expedition failing to push you anywhere and blocking a lane. Sure hope your battery ran out trying to get out and you had to pay a massive fine on top of a tow. We were crawling so slowly a chunk of snow detached from my roof and pinned down the wipers so they couldn’t move! Had to pull over and clear my windshield by hand so they could start moving again.

At least it was kinda fun after we climbed enough to leave the assholes behind. My A4 made mincemeat of Donner Pass. RIP your Jetta.

Oh we have plenty of Ice too anything thats not white basically....snow tires help....studs really help on the ice but they start shooting off around 100mph so i stopped using studs.

See you learned a very important lesson CLEAR ALL SNOW AND ICE off your car before you start driving.

The traffic on the California side of the lake is INSANE..I don’t leave NV most the time. Here in Incline we are a little more sheltered from the traffic.

I’ve driving my mustang in some bad conditions but this year there’s no excuse it’s been like this for months and there’s no sign of letting up.

For everyone else Snow Tires help...All seasons are just about useless....and any 4wd or awd without at least one limited slip diff is just about the same as 2wd. I saw a new BMW x5 with all Seasons Stuck on a slight hill before my house I stopped asked if they were ok, and informed them of their only option...Turn around..because the next hill is steeper and the street won’t be plowed....I then proceeded up the hill with no issue....Snow tires FTW.

At one point a bunch of Cuthbertson track conversion Landies got parked semi-abandoned. I don’t know if they’re still there, but that would be *one* way to roll.

I *did* clear my car! But then we proceeded to pull into basically standing traffic for 6 hours so it built up as if I’d been parked. Then when we finally moved a bit it fell down. It really wasn’t that much snow, definitely under 2" worth, and maybe 1/3 sq ft. I was very surprised the wipers couldn’t handle it. That said, the rear hatch was really heavy to open before I cleared snow before leaving. Your Jetta must be in so much pain.

Since I live in the bay area, all-seasons + chains if need be strike me as the way to go for Tahoe trips. You really won’t need more than 2WD with chains if you’re just visiting for the weekend, but it is nice to not be forced to install chains if you have AWD.

two wheel drive with chains can get you around if you are smart enough not to take the steep routes around town....every storm there are a few streets in town where you’ll see 3-4 people with 2wd and chains stuck but as long as you stick to the main roads you’re fine......also you can’t go over 35mph with chains :(.

That was at the Cuthbertson works, Biggar , South Lanarkshire, Scotland. I have no idea if they’re still there - I’m sure Rover guys have tried to buy them. The photos were taken by people who visited there some years back.

Maybe a Google Earth search is in order...
