!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

S-Class for next to nothing? I like inline 6s, so that doesn’t discourage me. A car like this is for cruising, and do you need 300+ HP to glide along in luxury? I’m sure there are serious downsides to such a purchase ($2,100 is just the entry price, I know having owned many German cars over the years), but it surprises me that these are so cheap.

And that interior - yes, just yes.

I’m sooooo bored with grey and beige, and I’ll never have a car with a black interior, especially in leather. Whilst not my preferred interior color, burgundy, this is a nice change of pace.

I know some people just want to set the cruise on the highway and be comfortable. I also want that, but since I drive a little...briskly, I still want good acceleration even above 80mph. If you don’t want that, no reason the good old I6 wouldn’t work for you. It should be plenty smooth.

fair point.

My 525i, even with a bunch of Dinan mods, is slower than my bone-stock Mazda5. Hell, some kid in his mom’s Sienna blew me away at a light. But I was in comfort with all of the toys in an attractive, well-built machine, and sometimes that’s more important than straightline speed; if that’s all I was after I could be driving a Mustang.

With this in mind, a 320SE would suit me just fine.

The I6 has enough grunt, and it’s less prone to blowing up than the V12. Mileage sounds more worrying, but it’s to be expected of this age I guess.

It’ll always be a risk really, though this is one of the most over-engineered cars of all time.

Even if it died and needed expensive repairs, it seems like a nice place to relax and listen to some music.

A friend of mine has a 1997 S500L and has had it for a year with literally no issues. The only reason he is looking to sell is that petrol is so expensive in the UK. He spent £2000 buying it so what like $2500. Do it.

I love the color of the seats, I’m a big fan of saddle colored leather in basically every application. I also had an earlier S class, an ‘89 560SEL, that I paid $1800 for and it was basically cheap and reliable.

Biodegradable wire insulation prematurely biodegrading is the Achilles heel of that era Benz, afaik. Pretty sure the upper and lower engine wiring harnessess are a potential time bomb, as well as anything expected to move like wires running to doors and trunk, and probably elsewhere.

Aside from that though... nice ride. (But mine would need to be an 8cyl for true happiness, after having owned a 6cyl 300E.)

Go for it. W140s are the last of the “hewn from granite” Benzes, so it looks like a good bet.

I wish I could, but there are two problems. First, the car is 1,000 miles away, and second, I don’t have $2,100 laying around :(

Oh, and a third issue - I’ve had VWs, Audis, BMWs, a Porsche and a W210 and have nearly gone broke keeping them running properly. Unless I suddenly become ridiculously rich I’m going stay away from German cars, even the well-built ones.

To be fair, W210s were definitely not MB’s finest moment. But I totally get that. In the meantime I’ll just bask in the magnificence of that leather.
