I’m trying to get a feel for how easy this is to address. My assumption is that the airbags are being made on an as-needed basis, so there are replacements available for everything, but in limited quantities. And please... I know that the odds of getting SRS shrapnel in my neck are very low, this thread is not about that

I have one and the dealer tells me that they will do it when they have them, so never. I’ve been in for several service appts and they have never been in stock. No notification system for when they come in stock. This is VW.

Depends on the brand and parts availability. Some have stockpiles, some will only let dealers order by VIN or demand.

Calling your dealer with the VIN and having them check parts stock would be the best route to go.

My 2015 Outback has them, but it’s probably not going to get recalled for about 5 or so years.

Two of our cars were affected...both Subarus. Priority depends on the year of manufacture, model, and the climate you live in.

For my wife’s car (which required the passenger airbag replacement) I preemptively made an appointment for the replacement before the recall notice went out. I think we were 4th on the list and it took a few months until they did it. For my other Subaru I’ve basically been told that I’m SOL and to keep waiting. My best guess is that it could be a few years if I keep the car that long.

For both cars they warn you not to have passengers ride in your car until the repair is completed.

The results are highly highly dependent on brand, region, and individual dealers. This isn’t a case of YMMV, it is a case of Your Mileage WILL Vary.

I had a car included in the very first announced list. It took nearly a year before I got my first recall notice, followed by several others over time all stating there were no parts. Eventually I got a notice that one of the airbag replacements was available. I made an appointment at the local dealer, who basically told me to go away when I showed up (they couldn’t be bothered to order parts).

Now that almost 2.5 years have passed, I finally got notice that replacement parts are available-- about a month after I sold the car. Just the other day, the same dealership that turned me away has begun contacted me by autodialer to come in, even though I updated my records with the manufacturer that I no longer own the car.

Other people (with other makes) have reported much much different experiences.

I’ve been waiting for well over a year and the dealership still doesn’t have parts.

I received a notice in the mail, set an appointment, and they had both driver and passenger airbags replaced in an hour.

My work (mazda) has them in stock for the first announced recalls pretty much all the time, some of the more recently announced recalls we don’t have yet, but 6's and rx-8's are getting done.

Honda dealer replaced three airbags in two different rides within 1-3 months of being recalled (way back at the beggining of Takata-gate), no issues. Check with your favorite dealership and they should be able to give you an honest estimate of timing.

The whole situation made me think these are not “lifetime” parts, though, just like catalytic converters and turbos. If you keep the vehicle long enough, the cost of one major component replacement could be more than the value of the vehicle. Or you can go with a “delete” repair and drive without a cat, a turbo, or an airbag... your tolerance for this option may vary with local, state and federal laws.
