Never. My grand parents had one each, a white one and a red one.

Me neither. Put a horn on it’s hood.

I like the idea of his and hers land yachts, though.

As someone who grew up in the ‘70's, this is peak Malaise, in my head. In reality, engines got worse after ‘76, but this was about as bad as design ever got.

guy down the road used to have one of these in 2 door. This came from the era of the ugliest domestic cars.

I also grew up in the 70s and 80s. And yet, I would rock this all day.

Nostalgia as a pathological condition.

Okay, joking aside, these kinds of cars have an important role to play in disabled mobility. See, until recently, wheelchairs have historically been the clunky folding types. The only way most paraplegics or amputees could be mobile and independent was to find a large two-door with FWD (so, no drive hump). They could then throw the folded chair behind them while sitting in the front and go. These were easy to find back then, but got much less so later. So, these malaise era boats are real heroes in that sense. I can’t hate them.

there was one of these, but el camino down the street growing up. we all(the kids i knew) tried to buy it at some point, but the guy wouldnt get off of it for a decent price. it needed a transmission. one day it was gone. it finally sold for about $500. i seen it about a year ago. gutted. had wide dirt track wheels and tires all the way around looked cool. no engine or trans. rust in all the wrong places starting to peek through. asking $1500....... theyre not all gone yet, but on their way.......

Wow, what a shame. I have to admit, though, I’ve never been one for the El Camino. It’s like a car that can’t decide what it wants to be, car or truck, but I know they have a devoted following.

My dad had Cutlasses and Malibus throughout the 70s. I loved true hardtops and convertibles - so I despised the colonnade cars. When I got my license in 84, I bought the oldest car of any of my friends by far — 65 Cutlass. At the time, I thought the 60s cars were far better than anything made in the mid 70s.

That one looks awfully clean though!

they are such fun looking trucks, but you have to be on top of your drainage, or they will start rusting quick. all the room in the world to put any engine in there. they look awesome with wide tires all around. i just have so many projects in the works, and lining up........

The only shame is that they didn’t start gaining popularity until the last 10 years or so. So many have rusted to nothing or went to scrap now that even “beaters” are fetching unreasonable money.

Once in a while I search CL for them. I can typically find one or two for sale in various states of disrepair. I’m in a FB group dedicated to 73-77 Chevelles and those guys find them all over the place. There are even guys doing full rotisserie restorations on the rarer models (Lagunas and SS cars).

there a little while back, when scrap was up, some of my friends hauled a whole mess of unique interesting junk. i think that there were two of those colonnades, and a few of those oldsmobile 88. i was sad to see those boats go, even if they paid nice over the scales......

I’ve thought about it. But figured I punish Oppo enough with my Honda 3 wheeler stuff and random vehicles that I find on CL. You can only push the boundaries so far.

When scrap was through the roof anything went. At that point they were probably getting close to CL money without actually dealing with CL punters. I would have done it too.

I was getting $10-$30 (depending on size) for water heaters back then. All my beer was “free” for over a year and a half!

there when scrap was up, we were pulling $350-ish per car. plus whatever you managed to pull off....... converters, aluminum wheels, usable engines, usable tires, battery cores, brass/aluminium radiator, skinning out battery cables, selling alternator/starter cores. there was some good money there for a bit. provided you made some time to do some parts cleaning......
