I was reading the Wikipedia page on the cash for clunkers program when I came across this

Kinja'd!!!

As if Jalopnik is some sort of respectable source /s

This part is bringing up memories though and I still want to go back and slap every single one of those people who traded in those vehicles. Especially the Vehicross...those things are such cool funky little trucks.

Forget your Vehicross, a Typhoon got crushed. A TYPHOON GOT CRUSHED

Yeah, I heard that Torchinsky guy is a schizophrenic fraud, Orlove is autistic, and David Tracy is #deplorable.

I don’t think too many legitimately collectible Murderstangs and Cameros were crushed.

I’ve seen some pretty shitty examples of most of those cars. Don’t assume these specimens were worth saving.

For the Mustang/Camaro/Corvette category, sure, those are a dime a dozen. But the one’s like the Typhoon, the Syclone, the Vehicross, even ones in poor condition are worth saving. If they qualified for the program they had to be running and drive-able at the very least.

VehiCross? That’s their best example? Does anybody have ANY IDEA how may W126 S-Class Mercedes-Benzes were scrapped!? ANY IDEA WHATSOEVER!?!?

I hope so, but I was more focused on the first half of that list.

Looks like there was a full list at some point, I’m assuming the bold text ranges at the bottom of the article used to be links.

You could probably still find the list somewhere on the internet.

Let’s face it, there are still plenty of cheap BiTurbos on craigslist. They’re all low mileage because none of them stay running long enough to to accumulate them. The article specifies a Syclone and a Typhoon. Given the common state of repair of these, there’s a good chance they were heading for the scrapper anyway. US spec’d La Forzas are whatever. I also hate the Ford 5.0 4.9, so there’s that. The TVR and GNX demises are sad.

a couple guys I went to high school with had Syclones. I don’t know how many times they blew up the engines and transmissions in them. if you find one out there, if it’s not in pristine condition it’s probably dead or close to death.

I have the full list of CARS trade-in vehicles in PDF form. It’s hard to pick out all the W126s, because everything’s broken down by model and year. I’d copy the Mercedes section onto here, but it spans five pages, and the chart formatting is not playing nice with Kinja.

Eh, rhetorical question I guess. I have the list too and the answer is 2,091, which breaks down to:

300SE - 344

300SEL - 191

380SE - 98

420SE - 7

420SEL - 757

500SE - 6

500SEL - 109

500SEC - 26

560SEL - 449

560SEC - 104

With most of the 500 SE, SEL, and SEC almost guaranteed to be gray market euro-imports from the early 80s. Nearly 2,100 vintage Mercedes S-Classes, which by the requirements of the program had to be running, driveable and insured for a year prior to trade in (so they weren’t basket cases), needlessly wasted. You should see the price on a good condition 560SEL these days. You used to be able to pick them up for $3,000, now good luck for less than 6.

Bonus round: 8 W140 or C140 600SEL/SEC, 1 1995 S600 Coupe, and 2 1995 S600 sedans for a total of 11 Mercedes-Benz M120 V12 engines that they poured liquid glass into and ran until they siezed...think about that. It makes no sense. None. They drove a working Mercedes V12 onto the lot for it to be intentionally destroyed and nobody did anything to stop it.

What a waste. I checked the numbers on trucks like mine (1995 Sierra), and they’re over 1,000 per model year . Not surprising, because of course they qualify. But a shocking waste, all the same.
