Kinja'd!!!

2011 Equus for $14,887. It has 110,331 miles on it. Clean Carfax with it only having had 2 owners. The first owner had it as a personal lease. The Second owner had it for 2 years and only put 18,560 miles a year on it. Its at a Mercedes dealer which I’m pretty sure means it was a trade, probably for an S Class or something.

I haven’t heard anything negative about the Equus, even on the owner forums, especially when it comes to reliability. There was some electrical things but as it was few and far in between. Nothing major with the powertrain. I love these things, especially considering what you get for the price in comparison to the competition. The one thing people had a problem with was the rather bland invisible styling. But anyway, is this a good buy?

Do some of the the 2011 and 2012 Equus’s suffer from oil overconsumption like the Genesis 5.0 Tau V8 of the same years?

Probably something to look into.

Also while these alternatives are not quite as luxurious an Acura TL, Lexus GS, or even Toyota Avalon in the same price range would still be nice. An older Lexus LS or Acura RL even could be something to look at. Infinti also made big cars I’ve heard, but I don’t remember anything about them.

From what I’ve read it’s one owner and he was having to out a quart a month or with how he drove every 1500 miles. Apparently the Tau V8 van easily reach 250,000 miles without a problem. One owner I read has 125,000 on his Equus with only having had to replace the struts.

I had a TL before, I only like the current gen GS which is a little out of my price range and I like the LS460, but at this price range they all have over 135,000 on them. Infiniti had the Q45 but the last model year for it was 02, way to old for what I want.

If I’m not mistaken, Infiniti’s biggest sedan would the M45 or M56 (a V6 option is available in the M35, M37, or M35Hybrid).

BTW, nice Equus.

The Equus is an extremely reliable car. EXTREMELY reliable. Like a discounted LS copy when it comes to reliability because that’s the aspect Hyundai needed to prove the most. Especially with the drivetrain since they expected these to be used and the warranties taken advantage of.

Months ago I wasn’t impressed with the Equus in terms of quality with my initial impression. Not due to materials or build but simply because the styling was old school. It made the vehicle feel older than it was, like it was a previously owned vehicle even when new (no matter immaculate condition.) But when I brought my mother along with me, looked again for a second opinion (as I always do when I have a strong reaction good or bad towards a car), I noted her reaction compared to the 2012 S63 on the same lot and realized I was being overly critical over nothing. Saying the quality and build isn’t up to what you find in vehicles twice its original MSRP isn’t the reality, it’s all psychological. It’s the aura that’s all wrong and it’s the same difference find between S-Class to Mulsanne or Mulsanne to Phantom.

I’ll need to read through that entire post on the 5.0L since that’s an extremely odd issue for Hyundai to have, especially with that V8 since it was shortly turned into a 5.5L from the factory for armored vehicle use. I can tell you that the person that started the post overfilled their engine and showed all the signs of someone that overfilled. Yes you’ll go through 1.5-2 quarts of oil when you try to run 9 quarts in an engine that runs on 7 quarts. But I’ll have to do some research into that one. Like I said, that’s an issue. The sunroof exploding when you shut the door is something I’d expect before the Tau eating oil only on 2012 Genesis 5.0 R-specs built at the end of the year in the color black or however specific that started to get.

I honestly believe once Hyundai becomes accepted with everyone as they actually are instead of what everyone wants to keep them as then retrospect will show that the Equus was a (+)300,000 mile car that everyone missed out on until every used example surpassed the 200,000 mile mark. That said, I wouldn’t buy an Equus unless you love ye olde aire. Plus the car has presence and a wow factor that you won’t realize until other people tell you about it.

I think Equus is a stupid good buy as long as you don’t plan on getting your money back. I’m expecting these to bottom out at a $3,000 trade-in value and list for $10,000 after 11 years. So there’s still 4 years of falling left to go on the 2011s meaning you’ll still lose $10,000 if you buy at $14,000 and keep for 4 years.

Excellent info thanks for this. Didn’t realize that they were that reliable though but this helps. I think the Equus is a fantastic buy compared to the competition. But sadly it won’t ever sell in the numbers the others do because people can’t see beyond the badge. I’m going to go see this car on Sunday so we will see how it goes.

Definitely make sure you sit behind the passenger side seat first then make your way around the car. It gives a more accurate impression of the build than jumping straight to the driver seat. But I say this about every limo...

Oh, and don’t forget it runs regular 87 octane.

Oh yea that would be my go too. Especially considering how the rear seats recline. And it runs in 87? That’s crazy. I don’t know why more people don’t buy these.

Well I’m 17 so money is something I don’t have a lot of but in 5 years prices will be around $5-6k I’d imagine. Would make a very nice 3rd or 4th car.

Damn you’re young. I wish I was 17 again. But yea these should be down to a decent price when you are ready for one.

I love it. Even before we got the Genesis I’ve been posting about these. Plenty of people always trash it whenever I post them, though.

The year to get is the 2012. 2011s have the 4.6 V8 instead of the 5.0 that became standard in 2012. And I think 2013 was the year they started to pick away at the loss-leader list of standard equipment they used to get people in the door when it first debuted, starting with the rear power Maybach-esque passenger footrest.

Also that’s a signature trim. You want the toys, you need the Ultimate unless you absolutely must seat 5.

Which pretty much equals stupidity. Why pay more when you can pay less for the same?

I can deal with the, what, 50 hp loss of power for a few grand less. The Ultimate is nice, but I would rather seat 5. The Ultimate looks useless considering the fact that the controls the fixed center console of the Ultimate has is the same as the Signatures fold down arm rest. The only difference being the screen between the seats, and the massaging right rear seat with companion remote.
