Psh, this year and indefinitely! Autonomous cars, tech focus, the millenial need to beat the band wagon, and direct sales means there is no limit to the amount of brands that could potentially start making their way into the US market. Especially if they don’t even NEED to sell here because their domestic market covers the costs!

oh yeah, exactly. What I mean is that the Japanese came in, got laughed at for their cheapness but undercut the domestic market, got better and became legit. The Koreans are on the same path, who is going to take their place at the bottom of the rung? my bet is on the Chinese. We’ll all laugh them to scorn for a few decades then all the sudden you will think seriously about owning one.

This depends on the tariffs. If we really do get a 45% tariff against chinese made goods, forget it. Chevy under a tariff like this means $21k Sonic, a $24k Cruze, a $31k Malibu, and  $40k Impala. V8 power comes with a german sized price tag now, and the z06 is a six figure car. All of this is 100% unsustainable. Any chinese firm looking at this would balk.

I’m not sure the tariffs will happen at all, but even the threat of them is probably making the key parties in china skittish about getting the ball rolling on the US market; imagine getting ready to launch your lineup of cars only to find out you will suddenly be almost 50% above market on everything against your competition. No one in china is looking to be the next Renault.

The thing with the Japanese is that their stuff wasn’t actually worse. Jingoism played a huge role in how Japanese products were viewed on account of the whole WWII thing. I have a motorcycle that was built in Japan in the early ‘70s using tech they developed in the ‘50s. It has a better hp/L ratio than a lot of modern bikes (100 hp/L) and is still plugging away forty-five years later. Honda was winning moto GPs within their first three years of racing less than fifteen years after having two atomic bombs dropped on their country. They know their stuff. Even though they’ll both have old car issues, I think I’d still take a classic Land Cruiser over a classic Land Rover.

The Koreans and Chinese are just trying to make things as cheap as possible. There is nothing innovative about what they are doing. It’s all market driven, not innovation driven. I may be bitter, as every piece of Korean made machinery I’ve owned has been utter crap. From cars to laser printers to paper cutters.

I wouldn’t be so bullish about China breaking into the US, given recent events. The specter of those tariffs has got to be hanging high over the ambitions of Chinese auto firms right now. Even if they don’t happen, they’re only the tip of the iceberg. There’s plenty of fuckery that could be committed against an auto firm looking to come to the united states under an openly hostile administration.

Already happening in New Zealand. Great Wall pickups are becoming really common among low end tradesmen, on account of you can get a new one for the price of a 5 year old Toyota or Ford.

For my money I’d take the used Hilux any day, but apparently plenty of tradies disagree with me.

Not seeing Chinese brand cars in any numbers yet though.

i’d still give them a big wide berth as i’ve only seen on Haval on the road.

Ever since China began exporting cars for Chile in 2007, since then we have had POS like the Geely CK:

Those were half priced cars for half the quality, really unsafe and didn’t last very long.

However ever since I want to say 2015? they have vastly improved, no longer using old Mitsubishi engines now with turbocharged, unique platforms, high equipment levels and unique designs. The first time I saw an MG GS I couldn’t believe it was Chinese, sadly the price has jumped considerably and now they are up to par with Korean brands but they still offer better value for money considering the equipment levels and engine technology.

The thing about the Hondas and other Jap cars when they originally came to the US was that they were actually better than the American options at the time. The Korean stuff was cheap but still reliable and sold with a longer warranty.

For Chinese stuff, look at the powersports market. You can get a Chinese side-by-side or motorcycle for significantly less $$$ than a Honda or Yamaha, but it’s not as good. They take short cuts to price them cheaper.

on the other hand, there wont be any safety, economy or emissions regulations to abide.
