Idk, but I just can't take modern American cars seriously.

To clarify; by modern I mean anything with multi point fuel injection.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m going to use this generation mustang as an example, but this is how I feel about most American cars I’ve driven or rode in. Granted I’m sure there’s plenty of exceptions and I’ve also never ridden in a Corvette or Shelby which I’m sure are completely different stories.

1) They unnecessarily disconnect you from the road.

I don’t know what it is, but when ever a friend or myself have hustled an American car it just doesn’t feel that fun. The seat’s feel so cushioned it dulls everything and there’s a similar effect from the ride height, which seems to be higher in American cars. Not to mention the fact American cars are usually more softly sprung than their imported counter parts.

2) The interiors try too hard.

This bug’s me the most. It’s like they were trying to design an interior for a 60k car, on the budget of a 30k car. Once a again the 5th gen mustang to demonstrate.

Kinja'd!!!

Maybe I’m OCD or something and don’t know it, but it’s like they were just trying to throw as many lines, materials, and patterns in there as they could. I much prefer something like this.

Kinja'd!!!

Ahhh! isn’t that much easier on the eyes? I’m not much of an art person, but this is border line relaxing to look at compared to the Mustang.

Now you might say.

“But those cars are a decade apart you can’t compare them!”

And I’ll say.

“The Integra was sold until 2001, so they’re only 4 years apart! Plus more modern Japanese cars aren’t as bad either.”

For example

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

But let’s look at some more American cars.

Kinja'd!!!

Chrome! Bulkyness! 2 tone pattern we created by making the odd numbered panels slightly darker!

Kinja'd!!!

Bubbles! Bubbles everywhere!

Kinja'd!!!

The area above the radio just drives me nuts! Two vents so close to each other, but off center! And the instrument cluster cuts into the center as well, it all just looks clustered and disorganized. Although TBH I kind of dig the shape of the steering wheel.

I could go on about all of these examples, but I’ll cut myself off here.

In conclusion it just seems like there’s something “off” with American cars. They feel like they’re toys or something. I’ll always enjoy driving a beat to shit Mk 3 golf way more than a well cared for mustang. I guess I have a lot of German white trash in me or something.

Idk rant over.

It’s difficult for me to like Fords because some kid I knew in high school was an annoying Ford fanboy. One night over Facebook he invited one of his other annoying Ford fanboy friends and proceeded to annoy the fuck out of me on Messenger.

Hence why I like Japanese cars. No Japanese car owner or enthusiast I’ve seen actively spent their time bashing any other manufacturer. Yet pretty much everywhere I turn Ford fanboys and Chevy fanboys seem to want to justify their fandoms to anyone that drives an “import.”

I can tell people will flock to this comment ready to disagree with me, but I’ve been conditioned to prefer Japanese cars.

You do know the first gen Focus was really an European design, right?

When the Focus first appeared, Ford was still trying to peddle these pieces of shit:

Chrome or chrome-like accents in an interior is a horrible trend. I guess people don’t like wood, they’re wrong and bad people, but whatever, that still doesn’t make chrome okay.

I disagree.

First of all, connection to the road: depends on the car. I’ll give you that the pony cars are a bit muted, but a Corvette isn’t. Similar to how a Porsche Boxster feels compared to a BMW 3 series.

Same story with ride height. Yeah, you sit kinda high in a Mustang, but that’s the way it’s designed. You sit super low in a Corvette.

Interior I guess we can agree to disagree? The previous gen Mustang interior wasn’t great, but that Acura interior looks terrible. Overly bland and cheap, especially for an Acura. The current Mustang interior is fantastic , and you’re wrong if you disagree. And if your argument is that American cars are trying to hard, how do you explain the FRS?

you picked bad cars, that happen to be american and compared them to good cars that happen to not be.

mmm, classy.

also hilarious that you think a 2003 corolla is anything but terrible to drive, especially with the 4 speed. floaty and massively disconnected from the road.

Look, you just don’t like bad cars, like the rest of us

Counterpoint: Japanese interiors and dull as a brick. I’d rather be in a Mustang than an early 2000's Honda. It could be built to the fucking moon, but that interior would still put me to sleep.

So to prove your interior point more, you use three of some of the ugliest interiors America has designed in the last 20 years.

Lets compare a 2008 Malibu to a 2008 Civic, shall we?

Kinja'd!!!

Clean, conservative, very not blobby. smooth, and easy on the eyes.

Compared to:

Bulky and oddly layered nonsense which manages to make the dash look approximately 20 miles long.

Well I can’t say anything about cars after say 2010 since I have very limited experience with them. Although it seems American cars have gotten better about all of the things I mentioned.

Indeed, but the Malibu’s interior will fall apart in approximately twenty seconds. Sad but true. There’s a reason no one was buying them. Good design, terrible execution. The Civic was awful design, but faultless execution (except the glovebox—that’s a flimsy piece of garbage, but then again it is on most cars nowadays...)

Other than Euro Fords like the Focus, which I don’t consider American other than the badge, I only have experience with 2 American cars. A Dodge Magnum RT (2007?) and a 2016 Chevy Impala Limited (old model). What I find different from other cars are the comically cheap interiors and horrible seats that seem to be designed with the morbidly obese in mind.

The Impala had some odd design priorities. Like uncomfortable seats with horrible seat fabric (a cost cutting effect) on a powered (luxury item) seat. Decent fabric on a manual comfortable seat would be far better. At 300 HP it was overpowered but with no incentive to actually use more than half that power at any time, given the chassis/steering that provided no involvement whatsoever and the slushbox that had no redeeming qualities other than smoothness. Despite the 300 HP engine this 2016 car (granted, 2006 design) had a 5/4 scaled interior and features out of a 90s subcompact. I would’ve preferred something nicer and as a compromise would’ve accepted 200 HP. That too would’ve made it a better car.

I’ve only driven the Magnum around town, so I can’t comment on it’s driving qualities that much.

I’ve been in multiple Malibus of that generation at work with over 100,000 miles that still feel solid and well put together. GM actually gave a damn with that bodystyle and at least where I live sold a metric shit ton of them.

That’s actually refreshing to hear that they cared somewhere back in 2008. I’m thinking of suggesting an Astra as my brother’s first car in a year or so since it’s relatively safe and boring and hopefully escaped most of GM’s cost-cutting since it’s just a three-year-old Opel underneath...

Kinja'd!!! "Logansteno: Bought a VW?" (logansteno)
02/22/2017 at 14:32, STARS: 1

The Astra’s aren’t bad cars at all. Less powerful but more refined than the platform mate Cobalt. The 1.8L does use a timing belt so if the mileage is over 100k ask if the belt service has been done.

They do have the odd lack of an aux port and the way the center stack is designed it’s pretty much impossible to put an aftermarket stereo in. So if your brother is one of those people that only wants to listen to music through aux he might be SOL.

Kinja'd!!! "Amoore100" (amoore100)

It’s a bit of an evil streak in me since the V50 doesn’t have an AUX and can’t be fitted with anything aftermarket that costs less than $500 so I want him to experience living in the olden days too.

Besides that, it sounds remarkably similar to my V50 compared to a Focus; not as quick but more refined, timing belt, and five doors.

Lemme rant on that Integra for a bit.

It is a clean and usable interior, and it is a fun driving FWD hatch, but damn is that exterior boring.

Kinja'd!!!

If it wasn’t for the goofy 4 eyes in the front, it’d be downright unmemorable.

It’s a fun car to drive, but it falls completely into the “Doesn’t feel special” category.

BTW, I rather like my cars to feel like toys. They don’t all need to feel serious.
