The building next to mine is frequently used by those with Section 8 vouchers, and there is a near constant stream of tenants moving in and out of there. I’ve talked to many of them, even had some as my customers, and for the most part they’re fine individuals. But this latest group is doing something that cannot be considered acceptable, poor or not.

Between the two buildings is a fenced off area with the power meters and air conditioning units for my building. I don’t have a key, nor does anyone else in my building. There is one window out to that area in my building, in my stairwell, and I don’t even know if it opens since it is inaccessible without a ladder. The building next door has a couple of windows that open to this area, and that’s where the problem stems.

Rather than doing the right thing by taking their garbage down to the dumpster, they just throw it out their windows into this inaccessible area. WTF, people? Whilst I can’t see it from inside my unit I can see it every time I walk up the front steps. And trash is just going to attract rodents and the like. I haven’t seen my landlord in ages, but considering how he’s been ignoring the place lately (forgetting to pay the water bill and letting the service get cut off, not changing HVAC filters for 2 years, etc.) I’m not sure if I can count on him for help.

You need a ninja carpenter to skulk over there and nail those windows shut.

My neighbors do something similar, but take it a step further by throwing it in the hallway. I have stacked their trash against their door so it falls in on them when they open it. More than once.

Get a couple ladders, use one ladder to climb over the fence, and the other to place the trash on the offending neighbors’ window sill with a note asking them to kindly not throw their trash out the window.

We all know there are born assholes in the world but I would hope these individuals have only hit rock bottom emotionally and are acting out while they try to dig themselves out of their hole.

At any rate, I would call the city administration. There has to be some office you can call for advice.

You might get somewhere (eventually) reporting it to the city?

That’s disgusting though.

Thats why the first question I always ask is “Is there section 8 housing here?” If the answer is yes, I find a different place to live.

Every once in a while I’ll pass them on my way out as they’re they’re leaving with a huge pile of trash blocking half of the hallway. I usually give a snide “you know, you can take your trash down with you.” All I get is dirty looks. Okay, guess you don’t mind having to clean it up when I stack it against your door again.

Is there a housing authority/code enforcement office in your town that you can call? Most municipalities have standards landlords are legally required to follow.

Even more so for Section 8. They have even stricter guidelines for the living conditions, and I’m pretty sure having piles of garbage adjacent to the unit is a violation.

This weekend is Mardi Gras down in Soulard (which I just learned is French for drunkard), so I’ve got more anti-social behaviour to look forward to. It’s like this every freakin’ year - people park in my neighborhood and walk down to the party, then on their return toss their garbage and bottles in the yards of the houses they walk past. I even looked out my window to see some asshole pissing on the side of my house. Since I don’t have a garage I have to worry about my car getting hit (although my neighbors do a pretty good job of that without having out of town visitors...) I wish I could just go out of town for the weekend and avoid these jerks.

That was an issue with some polish celebration on my side of town, people decided that any road was a good one to park on, including roads that we’re clearly not for parking.

Thankfully I’m lucky that most of the poles in my area are like 40+, so no house pissing, but still, lots of questionable sobriety in the drivers...

I used to have section 8 trash live next to me for 6 years. When I brought home my e38, they keyed it and my neighbors z3. Also they parked in a yellow zone each day with no repercussions what so ever.

No idea why, but the less money a group of people have, the more they trash their surroundings. I see it all over town regardless of racial make up.

I’ve watched people just throw their trash on their ground mere feet from a trash can they’re approaching. One place I lived was a mix of really low income to low income, frequently saw people just empty trash from their cars in their driveway/curb and leave it there. The stop sign a few houses down from me always had trash piled up around it because people would take the opportunity while stopped to dump whatever was within arms reach. I’ll never understand.

I wonder if it’s a power thing for the powerless. Life has shit upon them, and the only way they feel superior to someone else is to make someone do some dirty work for them .

Yeah, I don’t get it either, but then again, maybe I was raised correctly. I still clean the crumbs off of the table at a fast food restaurant when I finish eating even though I know someone will eventually be by to wipe it down.

I hate that man, it was relatively clean in Chicago and people did their part but in NYC the trash bins have a lid on them and people will literally put the trash ON TOP of the lid instead of taking 10 seconds to open it. Like c’mon now this is why the lids are so gross.

I hate rewarding bad behavior, but if you’re worried about rodents I’d probably go in there and clean it myself. But it sucks because they’ll just continue to do so :(

I’d do it, but it’s locked up and I don’t have a key, and my landlord hasn’t given me one despite my asking multiple times over the years. That made it frustrating when the power company did some work and forgot to turn my power back on. I finally used the zoom on the camera to identify which panel was mine, and in a thunderstorm used a broom handle to flip the power back on rather than waiting a day or two for the utility to do it for me. Bastards.

At work we have a similar problem where people will throw their paper towels on top of the stack in the trash can. They’ll usually just fall off the top and land on the floor leaving more work for the janitor. How much effort does it take to just push down the towels? It’s not like you’re going to touch moldy food or piles of shit - it’s just slightly damp paper towels 99.9% of the time. If you’re so damn worried about germs or whatever just use your own paper towel to push down the pile. Lazy fucks.

The only unfortunate answer is to avoid living near Section 8 housing. The people that live in it do not work for the $$$ to pay for their housing, and as a result do not have pride in themselves or their belongings. This leads to what you see.

Short term, complain to the landlord as well as the city. Long term, plan to work harder, spend less, and move to a more expensive community with other like minded individuals.

I know it shouldn’t have to be on you at all, but I guess you could climb over the fence and throw the trash over to the other side, then bag it up. I mean, it looks really bad right now, and its only going to keep getting worse.

Never had to go to that extreme, but I’ve had neighbors that would throw beer cans and cigarette butts in the street, and I’d have to go out periodically and clean them up, because I don’t want my street to look like shit.
