Kinja'd!!!

I’m looking to purchase some really sticky summer tires for the Solara (I know, call me crazy but it has potential). What I would like is some feedback from people who have had them or known people with them to get an oppopinion on the tires. I’ve read the reviews and looked at the specs I just thought I’d ask you folks too. Thanks in advance. Here’s an older Toyota for your time.

Well when you say “really sticky”, that generally wouldn’t refer to something like the S-drives. What is your intended use of the tires? If it is just for spirited street usage then I would imagine any summer tire is gonna be fun enough. So then it’s really down to treadwear and cost. In the same category you also have the BFG Sport Comp 2 and the Direzza DZ102. Both of which I have used and definitely loved. The Direzzas though are amazing for their price. Plus I have heard they last a REALLY long time which is nice for a street tire. So far I have been quite pleased with those on my Miata. They are sub-par at autocross but I don’t intend on running them much for that.

I’ve run them before. It’s a tire that has been out a long time. I liked them, but I have to imagine there is a better tire for the money by now.

I don’t think Yoks are as good as they used to be. I was just shopping for some 205/55-R16's for my mazda and may actually purchase the Firestone Indy 500's. At $77/tire. I only drive about 4-5k in the summer so tires last me a very long time.

I second the DZ102. Though if you want something really sticky go for the Direzza Z2's, but those are REALLY aggressive on the street, basically borderline track tires.

I had them on my NC Miata about 6-7 years ago - they wore a little quickly, but were great tires otherwise. Really good grip in the dry and okay enough in the wet.

Replaced them with Conti DW’s and was disappointed in the dry grip of the new tires, though the Conti’s grip A LOT more in the wet.

Have S Drives on my E30. Love them – great wear, great traction. But as others have said – tires do change over time, I’ve had mine a few years. There are other newer tires out there that might be better. What’s the price/wear/performance difference between something like a S Drive and a PSS that everybody loves these days? Latter is presumably more expensive, stickier, but wears faster…so perhaps you are on the right track, but do your research to make sure.

And cost a metric fuckton more lol. But yes, the star specs would be awesome to have. I eventually plan to go the SS2, RS3, or RE71 for my street tire, treadwear be damned!! Shit will get real expensive, but man will it be fun.

I’m on my second set of S.Drives. I wouldn’t call them really sticky. But as a compromise between a true street touring tire you would use for auto-x and an all season. The S.Drives will fill that need. They are great for 3 season spirited driving, with excellent rain handling. They suck at auto-x and will not be fun on a track. I drove my Galant VR4 with 205/50R16s from the Boston area down to the Tail of the Dragon and had a blast. Then drove to Austin Tx and back to Boston in the same week all on S.Drives. Great tire, but not for anything more than spirited driving.

I won’t be doing autocross, just spirited driving. The roads around me have a lot of twisties and high speed sweepers so I’m looking to increase performance in that area, along with decreasing braking distance (I’m running ceramic pads and I didn’t want the tires to be the limiting factor). My main concern is lack of grip in corners do to weight. With a full tank the solara is approx 3,700 pounds

Have them on my Mustang, not bad by any means but they’re not exactly grippy. Haven’t had any issues driving in the rain, and the road noise isn’t too bad either. There’s probably better tires for what you’re looking to do though.

That’s not far off the weight of a Galant VR4 (car may even be heavier). My other reason for choosing s.drives is I like the tread pattern and how the square side wall looks with 205/50s on 15x7 wheels.

Agreed. Same goes for Hankook RS3's. Great driving tire, not so sure if either will cut it on the track or autoX. The Hankook RS3's have been a bit stickier than the S.Drives in my experience, but they wear just a tad bit quicker.
