I was driving my daughter home last night and a SUV decided it wanted to nearly play chicken at a combined speed of probably 70mph. Dashcam video is dark, so I made a cute little picture (green car is me):

I thought at first they were going to cut straight across in front of me so I braked, hit the high beams, and honked all at the same time... when they started to turn TO FACE ME I cut to the right and they made a quick jerk of the wheel to make thier turn tighter, but they were still across the center line as we passed each other.

Luckily I was close to home and a fresh pair of boxer briefs.

People that do not know how to make simple turns just confuse me. Even when there are lines clearly painted on the ground to help guide, people just do whatever and completely ignore them. People like that are why I welcome our self-driving car future.

I was on a county road in NJ in my 1998 ZX2 with my younger brother in the passenger seat, and while traveling around a curve, a Ford Expedition came at me head on while the driver was grabbing something from the middle seats. I honked, she swerved and I cut hard right into a gravel lot that by the grace of God was there rather than the telephone poles that line most of that road.

I sat there for maybe 5-10 minutes with my hands not leaving the wheel and my eyes not looking anywhere but straight ahead, the engine stalled (manual trans I was still in 5th)

A guy came out of the house asking me why I was there, I told him the story and he goes, “Was it Red? She lives up the road...” He went on about how she was in that (new at the time) SUV thanks to her wrecking the last one and her husband wanting her to be “safe” in something larger.

Grrrrr. Or maybe sign her up for driving lessons to make everyone ELSE safer?

The last person who hit me (I was in a rental, thankfully) had temp tags on her car and I got the distinct impression from the cops that her record was not very clean. Made the assumption she had probably just replaced the last car she wrecked.

Small Rant Incoming...

I had one about an hour ago that I almost followed all the way to their house. We are at an intersection with two left turn lanes, I’m in the right one, she’s in the left one. Arrows come on and we go. She decides she should be in the right lane of the 2 lane road we’re turning onto. Had to swerve out the way, lay on the horn, and yell choice words out the window. She got in front of me once we were on the highway, I followed her (at a safe distance) for a bit, mimicking her every move. I sufficiently freaked her out once she got in the right lane and slowed down well under the speed limit. I then changed lanes and went on with my day.

While I normally wouldn’t condone this sort of thing, especially in Chicago, the reason I was so pissed was because while she was behind me after the turn she kept throwing her hands up and flashing her lights at me as if to tell me I was in the wrong for making an appropriate left turn into the appropriate lane.

I’ve also, in the last 6 days, while crossing a crosswalk at a busy intersection near our place, been nearly hit 3 different times by someone turning right on red without slowing down to check for pedestrian or vehicular traffic. And this was not the result of quick light/signal changes and me just taking off immediately, all 3 times there were a few seconds between the signal change and me going to cross.

Yeah I am the most calm individual I know and it is nearly impossible for stupid people to piss me off. People can do all sorts of dumb shit and it won’t really phase me. But the moment those dumb people doing stupid shit get mad at me for doing the right thing? Yeah then I am extremely pissed off. So I definitely hear ya on that reaction!

Although left lane campers make me want to run them off the road, brake check them, or other irrational angry responses. They are the scourge of all existence.

Oh man, preaching to the choir. Left lane campers are some of, if not, the worst. Though, the times I’m out and about there are usually plenty of opportunities to get around them so most of the time it’s not that big of a deal. Still infuriating though.

Oh man I encountered the worst kind of left lane camper a few weeks ago. He was doing the speed limit, 40mph, but this is a stretch of road where traffic regularly flows at least 45. I was doing~47, nonchalantly passed him in the right lane, no tailgating or aggressive moves of any kind. He was driving an old lifted diesel truck, Ford or dodge, can’t remember which, late 70's or early 80's. As soon as I was in front of him, still in the right lane mind you, he darted over right behind me to within ten feet of my bumper. There was another lane merging into ours right around there so I moved over to the left lane. He moved too, and kept pace, right on my bumper. As soon as traffic cleared he passed me, rolling coal the whole while, moved back into my lane and proceeded to slow back down to 40. At which point he flicked me off then rolled his damn coal all over me again. So I goosed it and went around. He tried to keep up but couldn’t. I took the next side street before he had a chance to follow. Every move he made was dangerous and stupid. I’m paranoid about running into him again.

That is just pure idiocy. Dude’s going the speed limit, fine, but if cars are passing at 45 or so to his right, that should be a sign to get the hell over. Then to be so wreckless is absurd.

This is why I hate having to pass people on the right. They are all lunatics and psychopaths so it never ends well. It’s almost irrelevant that the guy is going the speed limit. Even if he is going 100 in a 40, if the guy behind is going 120 you move out of the way. The speed limit is a guideline but stay right pass left is like a bible verse written in stone!

So they thought they were driving a Nissan GTR with that mid corner understeer eh? Yeah **** would have come out of me too but then I would have started yelling at them that this isn’t Gran Turismo and turn the wheel properly.
