Kinja'd!!!

That my 1983 BMW 7-series takes 15w40 oil. Otherwise known as “diesel truck” oil. The AutoZone dude looked at me funny when I said it’s going in a BMW.

I know the look. When I told my friend that high mileage AMC 4.0 Inline-Sixes would take diesel he gave me a sort of “the hell?” look.

I’ve been using Rotella in everything from old Honda motorcycles to new turbocharged Subarus. I also use it in my diesel Isuzu. I use the full synthetic T6 usually in 5w40 form. It’s pretty common for people to use Rotella in gas engines as their full synthetic is dirt cheap and is very good oil.

Careful, ‘Diesel Truck’ oil actually is slightly different than regular old car oil. My Jetta takes 5W-40 Full Synthetic, so I’ve used the 5qt jugs of‘diesel’ oil before. Reading up on it after the fact, the diesel variety has a lot more sulfur and added detergents that help clean diesel engines, but will kill your catalytic converter. So if you live in a state that does emissions checks, especially on an older vehicle, I would be cautious.

I’m planning to switch my E92 335xi over to Rotella T6 on its next oil change.

With a car that old, I’m not sure I would trust the factory specs anyway, lots of oil types now that didn’t even exist back then.

Rotella T5 doesn’t carry an API S* rating, only CJ/CK-4 for compression ignition engines. but that’s probably because they just didn’t bother certifying it for spark ignition engines. 15W-40 is a bit odd for a gas engine but I doubt you’ll have any problem with Rotella.

So I’m not crazy, the e28 takes the same.

for a while (maybe still) it had a zinc compound that’s great for roller cams which was phased out of gasoline oil a couple decades ago. probably in the interest of catalytic converters and reducing heavy metal vapors in the atmosphere.

like that’s important.

Same here, anything I can run the synthetic T6 in, I do. I’ve had great results in both cars and motorcycles.

My car aged out of emissions tests a while ago, so I’m not too worried.

If you are referring to ZDDP, it’s great for flat tappet cams. It is still present in some motor oils. Phased out in the early 2000's.

The newer formulation of conventional Rotella T 15w40 supposedly is over 1200 ppm ZDDP however it may not be the greatest for high spring pressure engines.

I may or may not have left a gallon of oil on the driveway after I didn’t put the filter cartridge on correctly #oops

Good stuff. I use it in my old F150 and in all of my 3 wheelers. I can go twice as long between changes in the trikes with it which is a big plus.

Just fill it with maple syrup. Make sure you get the butter flavored stuff or it could cost you a cam lobe.

yep.

fun fact, rotella t6? LOVED by the motorcycle community, especially the SV guys. (the SV takes 10-W40, so do most 4 cylinder japanese sportsbikes)

Some motorcycles with wet clutches use that or similar. If I remember correctly, it lacks some molybdenum used in car engine oils. The moly stuff makes the wet clutches slip.

Interesting. Is that because of the shared gearbox oil?

Most older M engines use that right?

Kinja'd!!! "bob and john" (bobandjohn)

most likely.

also, t6 doesnt have certain friction modifiers that would wreck havoc on the clutch plates.

I use the same stuff in my 02. Works just fine, but the diesel label has threw me off the first few times.
