Pitania? Isn’t that a ship that sunk?

Given that the L-series only ever came with a straight six, I SUSPECT that’s an engine swap. Probably.

Is it in Pittsfield? Is that Pittsfield’s version of Britannia?

frame swap. looks to be a mid 80s gm 1 ton truck......

That seems likely. Most of the hardware on the L is shared with the M, but they only made the L for like 4 years. Not the easiest thing in the world to get parts for.

and the R 100 series too. my friend has a few in his yard that he is slowly putting on the road. one has a chevy 1 ton frame swap. like you say parts for them arent exactly common/cheap any more........

My dad has an ex-Air Force ‘67 Loadstar with a 4wd package on it, and it’s not terrible parts-wise. I’ve been clamoring to put a yuge stepside bed on it. A little square tubing, some time with the brake at my place of work, some adapted dually fenders...

Also, I meant R-100, not “m”. Had a tractors and sequential lettering brain fart.

I have no doubt in my mind that the bodywork was simply pasted on a modern truck.

That’s my jam.

The one that guy wrote that song about?

one of those loadstars should look real cool with a stepside bed on it. just might be a bit interesting trying to source fenders big enough. would you be sectioning( i think thats what its called) them? cutting them half in two, and adding a strip in between your cuts. both length and width wise?

I could get it done with a late ‘60s Chevy dually fender, but I don’t know if repros are available and I hate to think how hard it would be to find one from a junker.

Kinja'd!!!

Most dually fenders just don’t have the right shape to match up with a Loadstar front fender. A late ‘70s GM doesn’t work, a mid-’80s GM could be packed out - kind of like sectioning- but it’s a little small, and an ‘80s Ford is too angular. Best option might be to reshape ‘80s Ford, to be honest, just because it’s actually big enough.

the LMC guys do have those fenders, but they just happen to be $$proud$$ of them.. stepside fenders . they cost enough that its almost cheap enough to buy a parts truck JUST for fenders

For that much, I’d make a side-agnostic oak die or (more practically) try to rework from Ford. Given that I’d have to extend the depth anyway...

Looks like price-wise the most varied and cheapest options are these guys, in fiberglass:

Though I’m not sure there are any really good matches for a Loadstar without tweaking.

Here’s what might be a good trick: an early-style Topkick outer fender. Mate it with a band of steel to make it the proper width, and done!

Kinja'd!!!

Only a little over a hundred a side, as well.

The other trick would be to get a set of Loadstar front fenders, turn them backwards, and adapt the “new” back for a taper and better appearance, but finding them might be difficult.

i seen a couple of those. those fenders do look good on the back too. the shape works nice back there too.

The quad cab setup is choice, but probably not practical to actually do. With the fender face being a separate piece, I’m not sure why that guy left it as-is with a missing headlight hole, but I’m not him.

I saw a quad cab Loadstar in a picture that somebody had modern dually fenders on, but the wheel cutouts were just the wrong size... That’s what got me thinking about the other approaches, that and the price.

the hole would be great for a fuel filler neck.

but yeah, the shape is just a bit awkward of the modern fenders.

The way I see it, if it’s going to involve some measure of fab work it might as well be fab work toward a result that I’ll like.

All the examples I’ve seen are dually, not dually stepside. It’s not an old style bed on these, particularly, and it’s not a stepside style bed. So, there’s a couple of problems - one is that the bed structure itself has to be “pretty” and smooth/single structure, which fights against being able to take the sides off. Being able to take the sides off is a *good thing*. A stepside bed is a lot easier to make and combine with a flatbed surface. So, the aim becomes to have as big a fender as possible, because it’s *not* just a dually fender. It’s a fender for *both tires*, at least to a degree. Call it 1.5 tires each side.

Also, the natural structure of a stepside, being a dressed-up narrow stakebed of a sort, means that it doesn’t look as immediately weird on the long wheelbase high up.

02/21/2017 at 19:46, STARS: 0

the nice thing about the stepside, is that you still have room on the inside of the bedside still. you just have to get the fender face about even with the tire face. you still have tons of room to “tub to fit”.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

i just read that last part again. are you going to keep it as a flatbed too? and use the stepsides as drop-in stake pocket sides? <<< that would be a ridiculously usable........

The truck is an ex-USAF truck but on the way had a drill rig on the back, so there’s currently *no* bed on the back, of any kind. I think I can be forgiven for wanting to make it able to do multi-purpose things. I don’t like a lot of steel stakebed setups, so I think it calls for some engineering...

My dad thinks we should be able to set it up as a dump, which I admit a narrow-bed arrangement would limit some. I may have options, though.

Kinja'd!!!

i could definitely see some drop-in stepside sides working in a narrowed wood floor flat dump-bed. might just have to keep some tin around(or some fold-up inners) to be able to heavily load up the bed.......

I’ve been playing in Paint with the profile of those Topkick outer fenders. Below: two views with the Topkick fender scaled to the right size within 3% or so.

Kinja'd!!!

I think as an outer facing and a piece to handle the contours, those things would be very hard to beat. Two Topkick outers, two ~10" bands of steel. Bottom of stepside fender piece basically lines up with the frame, which is a good place to stop or break over to a lower rubber fill or similar.

02/21/2017 at 21:22, STARS: 0

that would be a very nice, simple way to make things work. and you could narrow things up, until it all fits real nice. looks close where it is at there.....
