Today at work i got a sudden extreme pain to the abdomen. Went home thinking it will pass. Then after we put the kids to sleep it felt worse. So off to the hospital.

After many test and several pain killers injections turns out i am now waiting for an emergency operation to remove a foot of intestine since it ruptured.

So i will be off work for 3 months, might have to get a shitbag if things don’t go well

So me and the wife are scared, i didn’t expect my day to end like this

Gonna have to stay about a week in the hospital before i get to home to my wife and kids.

Wish me luck, i have a feeling i will need it

Im so happy to be canadian right now. No 50000 bill to pay

I’m glad you guys still have a sense of humor about it! It’s crazy that something so medically crazy happened so out of the blue. I hope the pain meds are working at least.

I used that as a negotiation tactic once to get the code for the nurse’s refreshment storage. I don’t imagine you’re ready for a bunch of stolen soda and popsicles yet though.

My dad has gone through this twice. He was (and is) a lot older and less healthy than you his first time. Yes there’s risk, but it’s not much. It’s even significantly less than when you’re on the highway. You’re going to be ok.

oh man, I know what thats all about. My dad had that happen to him on a family vacation at lake havasu. he had to stay at the crappy havasu hospital by his lonesome for like 10 days before my mom could come back and get him. then he had a bag for a few months, we called it bilbo (baggins). Sorry for the good times you’ve got ahead of you but remember how lucky you are that we have good medicine.

Though that does suck, hopefully you’ll pull through soon enough, weird how things can suddenly happen like that.

Back in 2002 I experienced the worst pain of my life which turned out to be a case of diverticulitis. The doctor gave me the diagnosis and told me that if it didn’t clear up in a couple of days I was headed for what sounds like the operation you’re about to have. Being without insurance and running a 103 degree fever I was a little out of it and proceeded to smack the 525i into a post in the parking garage just a week after getting it out of the body shop.

I do get occasional flare ups but usually antibiotics and a change of diet gets things back on track. I did have a massive flare up in 2012 which landed me in the ER. Thankfully I was unemployed and flat broke, and managed to find city-sponsored insurance to cover the bill. If you’re a woman, child, senior citizen or other group there’s a policy for you, but being middle-aged and male I was almost shut out until the last possible second; this is not how a civilized society is supposed to work.

Two days in the hospital and some IV antibiotics came out to almost $20k, and that was in a county hospital. I can’t imagine what it would have been if I required surgery. This was a teaching hospital so a good outcome was not guaranteed. My roommate came to the ER complaining of abdominal pain and was sent home. Two days later his appendix burst, making for an even more expensive visit.

Get well soon...

2002 for me. It’s somewhat frustrating that the warnings and prognoses keep changing over the years. For the longest time I avoided seeds and nuts since the common belief was that such items could get trapped in the diverticula, and was grateful when such restrictions were considered inaccurate (life without proper rye bread isn’t worth living). Trying to consume Metamucil on a daily basis had me gagging, and I was quite happy when I found some fiber gummies.

The one that had me worried was the belief that the polyps were more likely to become cancerous, but thankfully that belief has proved inaccurate based on years of studies. Doctors ask about a history of colon cancer, and I have to mention that my grandmother died of it. They’re considerably less concerned about it when I tell them that she succumbed at age 94.

I still haven’t had a colonoscopy, and I know I should get it done eventually. The insurance plan at my last job was borderline useless, and I really couldn’t come up with the $1,500 deductible to cover it. I tried arguing with the insurance company, telling them that the cost of a colonoscopy and polyp removal would be considerably cheaper than treating me for colon cancer, but as is typical when dealing with uncaring corporate entities, my concern fell on deaf ears. I haven’t checked on what it would cost with my current insurance company, but I’m sure it would be cheaper as we actually have a decent plan; not perfect, but decent. It drives me buggy that I pay my co-pay and yet still have to pay more once the dust settles, never knowing how much it will be. I still have a $300 bill to pay for an ambulance ride I didn’t want to take. Once again, a single-payer system really should be in place everywhere instead of having to worry about the financial aspects of basic medical care.

Take care and best wishes. Hopefully this will be the end of 14 years of pain.
