...when I can’t even be bothered to race you down the highway on-ramp.

I don’t teach full time because I love it too much to let someone/some policies get in the way of me being good at it. Today someone who was invited by proxy to our rehearsal decided to essentially contradict and undermine a lot of what I was trying to do, and the director is too much of a pushover to put a stop to it. I eventually walked out and screwed around on Facebook and here for the rest of rehearsal. It’s both not worth arguing about and completely infuriating. Pretty much ruined my day.

Have a beer with me, Oppo.

Well that blows. Tell them they’re not welcome back if they try to go back, I suppose.

Here’s to tomorrow being better.

I always assumed not racing down an on-ramp was just a byproduct of Tercel ownership.

I was driving the Abarth :(

But yeah...I passed ONE PERSON the entire 750 mile drive home in the Tercel.

Yeah, I can’t really do much about any of it. There’s still politics in high school band.

Tomorrow will be fine. I think I’m going to try to get a hike in after work.

Edited, thank you by the way. Can’t get too grumpy for manners!

I have to downshift into 4th on very slight inclines on the interstate. There’s a reason cruise control wasn’t an option.

I’m having several beers with you. I’m about to go upgrade to something with rum in it.

Here’s to shitty days.

A hike would be good. Hopefully some early spring weather has shown up for you and makes tomorrow a pleasant day.

Working with kids and youth is all politics, all the time. I don’t know how you do it.

Percussion! I mentally turn your name into xylophone about 95% of the time, by the way :)

Nah. Not true at all. You’re upset about something you care about that deeply matters. That’s real.

The stuff hounding me affects only me, and not in a terribly personal way. Money comes and goes. I’ve got a track day next month that I’ll skip as I can’t risk it, which seriously pains me, and it’ll be a long while before I’m back out there. A long while. Sure isn’t pleasant, but it also really doesn’t matter. Super first world. You’re trying to make the world a better place and got discouraged.

The world needs more of you than it needs of me. Cheers to you.

Heh. Lots of people do.

And that’s so cool!! I can’t keep a beat to save my life. Or do anything musical at all. Consider me jelly. :)

Nah, the root of both is that something is standing between us and something we enjoy. I appreciate the sentiment but I will openly admit that teaching has a selfish side, it just generally happens to balance out for society in the long run.

How do you think your Abarth would do going around a turn at speed? Is the center of gravity kinda high? It looks like it’d roll a lot. However, I’ve seen one very, very serious race car built out of one too. It’s about the same cash as a Corvette which is a lot more power.... but nimble beats power. Quite badly at times.

I’ll be joining you with some Blue Moon and Shock Top!

We lost use our riding trails this weekend because of one ignorant jerk. The rules were simple. The area is restricted to 5 acres within the levee walls. Do not cross over the levee walls. One schmuck, in one day, blew what took five years to build.

Stock, probably not fantastic. Theres a jalopnik commenter who said they did some basic upgrades (new anti-roll bar) and an ECU flash and drastically improve his wife’s lap times and one day I’ll do the research to confirm. Mine’s out of warranty, might as well have some fun now, right?

Dunno. I’m not the one to ask. I’ve never owned a vehicle with a warranty.

One day I’ll be an adult and know what that’s all about. One day. Based on latest events I’m still a bit far off, but one day. Maybe.

So, are you a specialist who goes from campus to campus, or more like a tech who works year round?

My assistant director’s husband is officially a FTE at our feeder high school, but he only teaches two classes there. He spends two classes a day at my school (beginning percussion, advanced percussion) and teaches the same two classes at our sister middle school. It’s a real nice set up for him because he gets to build his drumline and percussion ensembles the way he wants right from 6th grade. The bonus for his wife and I is that we don’t have to try and juggle what to do with percussionists when we’re spending most of class on long tones, lip slurs, and chorales.

For a couple of years, I was the only director at the school; whenever we’ve had two band directors, I always establish a dedicated percussion class. Makes all the difference in the world. When you have a specialist to come down and teach it, all the more better.

I love schools that think that way. I have a totally different 9-5 and just teach this one group in the evenings. They were debating a percussion class during the day and getting one of us to come in for it but things haven’t worked out yet.

Hah. This is my one and only, and it had a lot to do with irrationally wanting something fun that also happened to be Fiat Chrysler.
