So, I went to the Chicago Auto Show today.

The BMW booth is always one of the most crowded. But they fixed that this year!

Literally EVERY car on display was a hybrid. WTF?

Needless to say, their booth was a morgue.

Was there an i8?

Yeah, I didn’t even walk through theirs this year. I spent a significant amount of time at the Volvo booth drooling all over the brown V90 though.

Yes, but locked.

Yes- I think they had all of their hybrids represented. M cars no longer exist, apparently.

I walked into the middle of the BMW booth, looked around, said WTF? And left.

That brown Volvo wagon was one of my favorites too!!! I also liked the lifted versions on either side, but the brown one was better.

Did they have the owners booth thing where you had to show your keys to get in?

I too liked the lifted ones, but I was amazed by how pretty the brown was up close.

Here’s hoping buyers vote with their showroom absence

Yeah that brown V90 was so sexy.

I didn’t ask- I have a BMW, but it’s pretty old by their standards and me and my buddy were trying to see it all before they closed at 8.

My wife needs a new car this fall. I may see if she’d consider the lifted version. I’d take that brown one as it is. No changes.

Well it certainly cleared out the crowds from their display. They’re always crazy crowded— not this year.

The guy here who just bought the blue S90 the other day said in that post that there is a six month waiting list for brown V90's. Clearly a lot of people like it.

Whether we like it or not, hybrids are going to become more common out of necessity. BMW has really started adding hybrids to their lineup in the last few years.

I get that, and it makes sense for them to promote them more, too. But to literally ignore everything else they’re doing seems crazy.

No M2, no M3/4, no 340i, no 6 series, and the only representatives of the brand new 5er and 7er were hybrids - they didn’t even bring a 3GT!

OK maybe it was wise to forget the 3GT...

Let’s all forget the damned 3GT. That thing is atrocious and BMW should be ashamed.

I see what you’re saying. Maybe that was just their focus for this show. I don’t think this year was a refresh year for any of the M cars. They could have at least brought the new M760i though.

Funny story - my wife has an X3, and one time when she brought it in for service, they gave her a 3GT as a loaner. She liked it.

EDIT: I fully agree than BMW should be ashamed of it though.

People who go to car shows and people who actually buy cars are two different bunches.

I played around some with their configurator. The V90 starts at $49k, but can hit high 50's/low 60's real easy. I’m sure you can option it into the 70's, but I didn’t try the clock every option thing.

Yep. All the Parshes were locked as well. I sat in an i8 a couple years ago when I had a media pass. It was hard to get in and out of, but once you were in it was actually quite comfy.

We’re not going to have fossil fuels forever and full electric has not reached a point where it’s a viable option for long distance driving. I do feel hybrids are only a temporary fix, but until a viable option is made available automakers have to do something.

True — right now they reckon the U.S. only has about 300 years’ worth of fossil fuel resources and there’s no practical substitute yet.

CNG cars might be a good transition bet, too, from what they say

This is actually the least ugly photo of a 3GT I’ve ever seen. They’re much worse in person.

Porsche is the only manufacturer at the Chicago Auto Show that always has every car locked (I’m excluding the local dealers that supply the Lambos/AM/RR/Bentley etc). You can sit in an S-Class, a Maserati, or a 7er, but not a base Boxster.

It is, but there’s a tremendous amount of vandalism that happens at the show too. I got in 3 cars yesterday where it turned out someone from the mfr was working on trying to assess/fix damage done.

Used to work at a Honda dealer that supplied production cars for the show, and we removed everything in advance, added locking gas caps, etc, and they still needed plenty of repairs after the show.
