The tech pulled the pan and drained four gallons of fluid out of the engine. Two gallons of which was coolant. Even with the drive belt disconnected they can’t turn the engine by hand. So that’s that. A remanufactured engine and labor is more than the value of the car.

Game over.

Not sure what it was but the IMS bearing was upgraded so I don’t think it was that. It’s not worth paying for the labor to find out.

Anyone have any use for a roller? It’s got brand new Pilot Super Sports on the rear wheels. Maybe 500 miles on them. If you’re in the bay area and want to swap out your old tires with new ones before I donate the carcass to Goodwill or whomever, let me know. Move quick. The shop doesn’t want to go into the storage business. Also welcome are any ideas on how to get rid of what’s left. I don’t have any way of parting the car out (no garage) but there’s plenty of cash to be made if you do.

If anyone needs me I’ll be at Lucky 13 in Alameda killing the pain with several Sierra Nevadas while flipping through an issue of Porsche magazine, softly sobbing.

Uhh. Let me know if I’m reading this right. You’re giving away your Porsche 996? I know the engine is shot, but... you’re just giving it away??

I live about 800 miles north of you. Not that I have the driveway/garage space for a 996 carcass, but still...

Doable and cheaper. However the man who doesn’t have space to part a car out is the same man who doesn’t have space for an engine swap. If I did I’d be on eBay right now buying a $5k used engine and rolling the dice.

If I could tow it to my imaginary garage with my invisible tow truck I’d part it out. Paying for a tow to a rented garage seems fiscally dubious. (Not that I’ve made a single financially sound decision at any point before this, I know.)

2001 Carerra 4 with 129k on the clock. New tires, brakes, clutch — it’s a cabriolet under a factory hard roof. More or less bone stock. I have a set of pipes for a muffler delete that are too loud for Seca, hence not installed. The rear seats have been removed but I still have them. Title, three keys, fresh registration. Brand new air/oil separator and coolant hoses. Exterior is lapis blue. Interior is that ugly camel color that always looks dirty but it’s just the color. Stock everything. I’ve only pulled things off to make it lighter.

I’d say “ran when parked” and “I know what I have” but it didn’t and I do.

How long can you keep it where it is? I’m genuinely interested in it as a project car. But if you need to get rid of it in a couple of days, then I’m out.

I’ve got a good relationship with the shop but it’d have to be gone by this weekend at the latest. They’re all track guys so they know my pain and would surely like to see the car live on, but they don’t want to be in storage business.

And I was thinking about driving down this weekend, but that won’t work well since he’s at an event on Saturday. As long as I can be comfortable skipping my classes this week, we’d be on our way to pick it up. But just be aware that this isn’t exactly a sure thing. Maybe there just won’t be any time for us to go down there and pick it up and you’ll have to give it to someone else or to whomever else.

Will do. I’ll email you tonight or tomorrow. Literally the other defects are a crack in a tail light and the factory stereo has a bad knob so it’ll only search for stations in one direction. Both front and rear bumpers could use a respray. All minor cosmetics.

That car still has quite a bit of value. I bet if you listed it on Craigslist for 5k it would sell instantly. Check out some of the sold Ebay listings for 996 cars with bad engines...

That being said, if you’re set on giving it away I could probably arrange to pick it up this weekend.

It’s technically possible but your numbers are wrong. It would cost less to do the swap and also the car would never be worth anywhere near $30k with a swapped engine. Porsche buyers like old, air cooled, matching numbers, stock, etc. They’re not car buyers; they’re Porsche buyers. The brand loyalty is strong.

Besides, I bought the car for $17k with a Porsche engine with a replaced IMS bearing. That’s the pinnacle of value for that model really. Also I don’t have the space to do the work and paying a shop to figure it out isn’t in the cards.

I meant 20k$ if you were to ask a shop to do it for you. A crate LS1 engine is around 10k$ new, but slightly used you can get the engien and the transmission for that price... Then probably around 10k$ extra to get a shop to fit all this in the car.

I know 996 are cheap as hell, I almost bought one myself a couple years ago, but I think a good well built version with a LS1 swap could sell for 30k$. You are right that it would not interest Porsche purist but other (like me) would definitely consider it.

Make it look a bit agressive after that and 30k$ should be a good selling price for it. Not to mention that “purist” or whatever they are piss on 996 daily in the first place so I doubt an engine swap would change anything haha

This one was 25k$ on BaT a while back and it sold very fast apparently: http://bringatrailer.com/2013/10/18/a-solved-996-ls1-swapped-porsche-911/

Even Doug who used to work for Porsche qualified it of “Absolutely awesome!”: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/absolutely-awesome-1448764252

This one with an LS3 was on sale for 37.5k$: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/the-ls-porsche-911-round-2-1483213321

Anything I have on the 944 that’s shared with a 911 is instantly $$$$. Like the mirrors. I do not wan to break a mirror on my car. NOPE.

I’m offering the car for free to anyone who will keep it from the junkyard. However if you’re sincere enough to throw me a few bucks, I could sure use it and will accomodate whatever you need to help get it. Shipping would be $400 or so is my guess. It’s $900 all the way across the country. I’m not sure how they’d get it on the truck without an engine but I don’t transport cars either so I’d bet they’ve probably solved this problem.
