!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A few weeks ago he posted a picture on Instagram of an old Matchbox Dodge Caravan, and it sparked something inside of me... because I had one.

So off to eBay I went, and down the rabbit hole of old Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars I used to have as a child.

The Caravan, this Challenger...

Kinja'd!!!

Matt, you’re gonna cost me a bunch of money...

SAVE THEM!

My parents threw out so many of my toys when we moved, or had huge rummage sales.... I remember having several 5qt ice cream pails FULL of LEGO that my parents talked me into putting on the table of toys outside at our apartment-wide rummage.

Them and the cars. All gone.

I let my kids play with new or otherwise cheap and non-memorable cars and trucks.... the good stuff I keep upstairs or boxed away in my closet.

Mostly because I had to spend several times over what they were new to re-purchase them as an adult.

Is that a piston popper? I had the Mustang PP. And a few Dixie Challengers.

Not sure what they were called. Just found it while looking through old Matchbox cars on eBay.

Similar casts were sold as the Red Rider (as pictured), Flame Out (white w/ red/orange flames), Big Banger (red, Big Banger labels), or Cosmic Blues (white, blue stars or blue, white stars).

None should be expensive to re-acquire since they’re all USA exclusives and common.

I might have had Cosmic Blues as well.

I painted the tail lights on mine, and have no idea where it went. I loved Matchbox of that era. The dished wheels, the suspension....

I loved that era of Matchbox as well, and the suspension was the primary reason. Hot Wheels axles of the day would bend if you looked at them funny, and then the cars would just ride on those stupid humps inside of the wheels on the chassis. Matchboxes had that nice sproingy suspension that could take a beating. I have a pretty nice chunk of my childhood cars, but hundreds of them got thrown away. I wouldn’t go crazy on the bay of e, but if you start looking at junk shops and resale shops, you’d be surprised how much of that stuff is out there for not that much money.

No good resale shops near me, and all the “antique” places that do have toys tend to price them out of the realm of reasonability.

I go to swap meets and whatnot during the warmer months, but most of the vendors sell larger scale, or ONLY Hot Wheels.

Besides, I don’t mind dropping five or six bucks if its mint and on a card, like the Challenger I bought yesterday.

The Big Banger and Orange Peeler (orange) were available worldwide befor 1980. Red Rider and Cosmic Blues were USA exclusives and made in Hong Kong, being sold here in 1980 when Lesney split its US line from the rest of the world for whatever reasons. They were gone in 1981. For those of us who followed the situation closely, this was Lesney’s attempt to maximize profits in a sinking economy. It didn’t work, because Lesney went bankrupt in 1982.

the Piston Popper was a Mustang and was blue.

I’ve gone down that rabbit hole years before-44 years to be exact. I can’t get out of it-and really don’t want to.
