...reminded me why NOT to use Windows 7 now. It’s been updating for more than an hour, and it’s already SP1.

No Update Rollups?

Went from Windows 10 to Windows 7 at work. Couldn’t believe how primitive Windows 7 felt. The task manager is garbage and I don’t have my linux command-line utilities and the ribbon interface in Windows Explorer is so much nicer (two clicks to reach “show hidden files” instead of burying it beneath several dialogs)

yeah, unfortunately there was a bug in SP1 which makes Windows Update piss off and take forever while pegging the CPU. I don’t have the KB number but there was a fix for it.

Riiight... forgot they opened up.

I’ll try that now... thanks. Update crapped out anyways.

It did prompt me to update Windows Update itself on the first run, I suppose that’s for it.

Funny thing is I still dig through those dialogs to set that up anyways, out of habit. I make it a default to show hidden files and extensions, for security reasons.

I guess Windows 7 is still good if you use it like Embedded (which is what I’m sort of doing here, as a VM appliance), since you can really strip it down to barebones.

Stuck at the “checking for updates” phase?

I was running into that issue on my Windows 7 machines (3 of them) for the longest time. I’ve managed to fix the issue (with the help of this article ), and Windows Update works again (finds updates within minutes, not hours):

Install KB3020369 and KB3177467 first, then KB3172605 (all in 32bit or 64 bit depending on your system, and restarting in between for good measure.) That has at least worked for me.

Says unsupported, but seems like I’m missing a dependency.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/3020369/april-2015-servicing-stack-update-for-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2

VM still slowing to a crawl though, so I guess I’ll go for lunch first...

Seems like 3020369 is the only I need before 3125574. Rollup should bring me up to speed to April 2016, which I think one or two more update runs should clear out.

And moving the VM from my storage spinning drive to my programs SSD helped...

http://plugable.com/2016/06/08/windows-7-wont-update-what-to-do/

I setup two Windows 7 computers at Christmas and they sat checking for updates for over a week. After completing the steps they found the updates within minutes. If all else fails.
