Kinja'd!!!

Finally got a chance to visit where it all started. Had a nice couple of hours to explore the Wright Bros Narional Memorial. The rock is roughly where they took off and the markers show how far each of the flights went. As far as national parks go, it is pretty basic, but I appreciate that. It was an open field then and is largely the same now. A notable change is the grass that was planted in the 20s to stabilize the area. We also got to spend time on the Outer Banks. Really enjoyed it. Nice beach, uncrowded this time of year and the weather was good for us.

I just recently read the book title, I think, “The Wright Brothers.” I know, pretty obvious title. But it was very good.

If you went this past weekend, you made a good choice. I love NC beaches, they’re the best.

Last time I was there we had roughly 30 mph winds. Looks like you picked a good day though.

I haven’t been to Kitty Hawk a while, then again it’s about four hours from where I live. Good history out there.

Nicely done. Makes me home sick. I used to live in Nags Head for years and then moved to Southern Shores. Have been there hundreds of times. When I was a kid they used to close it to tourist in winter we would skateboard the grounds. Occasionally we would get chased off by the park service guys. They really hated when we went up on the hill to skateboard down.

I went about ten years ago, an incredible place for sure.

Fun side note, I’ve flowin in a car about 83% of the way to the first marker.

Thought you might like to see this. The Outer Banks History Center has a Flickr account and all sorts of old beach pictures. Here is one when they first installed the Memorial and marker in the 1930s. The only residents at that time were in Kitty Hawk village and Old Nags Head. My grandfather built many of the old cottages in Nags Head. Notice there were no beach cottages near Kill Devil Hills at that time.

Great pictures, thanks for posting. Many years ago, we attempted to visit Kitty Hawk during a road trip with a couple of friends and their toddler and baby. The weather turned rough as we were on the ferry crossing over to the outer banks, heavy rain set in, and we ended up just heading back to our friend’s home near Wilmington, albeit following a very long route around the sound instead of taking the ferry.

One of these days, I would like to take another trip back east and actually visit Kitty Hawk. But this time, it will be without a toddler, without a baby, and without a ferry ride across rough water...
