*Street Legal* Track Car, what would you buy?

I took a brief look at my car today and I don’t think the engine will turn over by hand. I can’t roll it in gear at all. The starter solenoid makes one click. Tomorrow the pan will come off and actual mechanics will tell me that I need a new engine. That will force a decision. I’m referring to this, from yesterday:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So depending on the price of engine + install, do I repair the 911 or do I start with something else?

Here’s the rules of the game:

1) Do not suggest I quit tracking cars as nobody needs your shit.

2) What do you think the repair will cost? (Speculate away; I’ll update.)

3) What would you spend your money on instead? (Same)

4) 300+ HP, or insane power to weight raio.

So it’s it’s $14k and I wanted to go a different route, well, how about this?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Or this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Easier to work on with cheaper parts are always preferred. Relatively track ready is also a plus.

I’d go with a C5 Corvette, but in a racier color

I think it would be hard to go from a 911 to a M5 for trackdays. So I vote for the vette, or to put a LS in the 911.

The obvious answers are obvious: Spec Miata, or cram an LS into your Porsche.

I daily drive an E60 M5 which I’ve taken on the track. Not knowing that, you’re 100% correct. I just can’t afford to break the E60. An E39 would be a lot cheaper and frankly break a lot less too.

Already noted that one just a little bit ago, which is what led to the post! Lots of options in the Bay Area and that one jumped out.

I know this is the obvious answer, but if you’re doing a lot of track days it’s hard to argue with a Corvette, just because if and when you blow something up under the hood it’s probably reasonable to repair it rather than replace the whole car. A similar alternative if you’re to DD and track would be a CTS-V but it would have to be a first gen to get into your price range.

idk maybe this’ll be of help, from an onlooker

sounds like this (choice of track car right now) is more of a financial , not an emotional, one?

(If that’s the case, at least it should make some of it easier...)

I’m not a very good driver so I need horsepower to fill in the gaps and hide my lack of ability which is why the Miata isn’t on my list.

Eh, I’m usually the first to say “get something european and unreliable”.

But you want a track car that is ready-ish and cheaper to maintain, and you already own an E60. So I’d probably go:

- Mini Cooper S (JCW)

-135I

-Abarth

My good racing friend told me I fucked up when I bought the Porsche and I expected him to rail against it being 4 wheel drive or a convertible (both 110% valid arguments) but his immediate explanation was that I should have bought a C5 as the amount of car for the money is incredible.

The E39 M5 is a great car, with good dynamics (for a sport sedan). Just think it will never provide the same sensation a 911 does on track. You’ll miss having a light sports car.

Nothing makes you a better driver faster than a slow car.

You’re completely right. That is another huge reason why I don’t use the M5 I already have. I had kind of forgotten what it’s like around turns at speed. An M3 seems the far better car for the job, but finding one used and not trashed is a bit of a chore. The 911 is/was great for competing with M3's, STi’s, VW GTI’s, Focus RS’s... things that can go through a turn without a huge inertia management issue. Way more fun on the track.

Find me a VW Scirocco that’s worth a shit and I’ll put on a fucking clinic on how to drive it. It’s the true exception to the rule. Pretty sure I could outrun a superbike in one of those things.

I have raced several 240z’s and they make fantastic track cars. Plus the v8 doesn’t weigh much more than the i6.

Which is probably exactly why it should be. As long as you can hide the mistakes you’ll never fix them. Buy a slow, delicate car, be embarrassed for a year or so, and come out of it a better driver.

I did a couple of seasons racing 2CVs many years ago and it was the best thing ever for my driving skills - make a mistake in one of those and it’ll take you a whole lap to get back on the pace. Which means you ALWAYS know when you did it less than perfectly, and so does everyone else. I’m not recommending going to quite that extreme, but it’s easy enough to buy a Miata or an FRS, try it for a while, and if you hate it, sell it.

There also a lot to be said for a car that’s slow enough that your accident won’t hurt too much....

I watched a race version one of those eat the face off of every car on the field at a GT race at Sonoma.

It might be repairable as a Corvette, kinda, and different enough of a choice for me to feel clever somehow.

E46 M3. Pretty frickin easy to work on, except the exhaust manifold. Enough power to get you in trouble and a awesome sounding engine similar to the 911

The C5 is a no brainer, especially if you can stretch to a Z06. I’d be surprised if you got away for less than $10k on the Porsche, but SSF has reman RND Porsche engines that have a good rep, for fair money. Worth checking out.

Personally, I’d love to track a Z4 coupe, but the Vette is undeniably hard to beat.

I took a test drive in a M-Coupe before buying the Porsche. It was a huge letdown. A neighbor has a Z4 that I want to drive so badly that while I was out spraying wheel cleaner on my own car I was tempted to spray a bit on hers. Didn’t want to send a mixed message: I love the car, that’s all, I’m sorry.

Yeahhh, if you want to be a better, faster, driver; you might want to re-think this strategy. You don’t want to be the dude who has a train behind him in the corners and then rockets down the straights because they are only relying on horsepower. It’s not hiding anything.

The old Sport Compact Car project 510 is up for sale... SR20-swapped 510, so relatively quick, full rally suspension, full cage...

If I hadn’t spent way, way too much on dresses, heels and glasses this week...

For the budget... I got nothing. C5 will probably be your best bet. The only thing I could think to do would be the build I want to do, there is this english manufacturer that builds RWD rear engine kits for austin minis, but tbh the time and effort you are still looking at about 30k. Not sure what your total budget looks like, but in no way is that a replacement.
