Kinja'd!!!

A buddy and I went halfsies on a ‘78 Apache War Eagle. We’re going to use it for going to races. The previous owner rebuilt it four years ago with a new sub floor, canvas, cushions and seals. They then used it on all me two week trip, and never again. It needs a bit of work and cleaning, but it’s a hell of a nice camper for $600.

No picture with it open for use

Do you want the ban-daid ripped off quickly or slowly?

That is quite an imposing name for a camper. Looks awesome though, love the color.

Kinja'd!!!

Now you just need a Comanche eliminator to pull it and wear a redskins jersey.

I ment to ask, STL Indy? Me and FIL are going and probably his brothers. I like turn one in the braking zone, it’s not as full as main straight and get some good action some times.

They actually named it the Comanche Eliminator?

That’s all kinds of wrong haha

My parents had an old Apache popup (I don’t remember the year). The thing was enormous once fully opened up.

But it eventually reached a point where it had been sitting in the backyard unused for several years, and got infested with mice and bees. So rather than replace the canvas, mattresses, etc., the whole thing was torn down until it was just a flatbed trailer with shallow walls.

Possibly. We’re already going to the 500 and the Road America race, so I’m not sure the budget can handle a third one. Plus all that Rallycrossing this year :)

Ha! Coincidentally, the guy I went in on this with was nearly given a Comanche a few years ago.

This one nearly met a similar fate, but the PO rescued it and restored it, beyond all sense of reason. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that the frame she had sanded down and repainted was once again covered in surface rust.

Thanks! I love the color too. It’s a hell of a lot better looking than your average pop-up.

Back in the early ‘70s my family had a similar trailer called a Nimrod. I guess the name had a different meaning back then...

That’s a sweet find, and a nice truck!

Were you unloading motorcycles in the ditch?

Thanks! I bought the truck new for a price that was practically stealing it, and I’m gonna drive it into the ground.

No, I wasn’t unloading motorcycles in the ditch. That’s at my friend’s house, he was unloading an oven in the ditch.

The only brand new wheeled thing I ever bought was our Coleman Sedona pop-up around 2007. We’ve pulled it from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back twice. It’s been sitting out front now for about three years unused. My wife and I are hoping to take it out this summer.

Haha! Totally :)

I’ve been wanting to convert an aluminum framed enclosed cargo trailer into a nice big camper, but the monies are needed for our actual house.

When I originally floating the idea of going in on a cheap pop-up, I said maybe we’d use it for a few years, and then pull parts off of it for the conversion. After we bought this one, we were taking a good long look at it, and I said, “We’re not parting this thing out.” My friend replied, “Oh no, this is getting Death Match 2000'd.”

I think we’re going to be camping at race tracks for many years to come in this. We’ve already decided our first modification. The refrigerator we’ll never use is coming out, and a portable toilet is going in for emergency use.

We used to borrow a friend’s pop-up to camp outside the Indy 500. When he sold it a few years ago, I bought a used 21' hybrid for my family. That thing was great to camp in, but a bitch to tow for the little 4.8 in my truck. I sold that last year at a small loss because of some water damage.

Towing this thing home, I had forgotten how easy these pop-ups are to tow. You can barely tell that they’re there. It’s just big enough to see in all three mirrors, but doesn’t block any views.

I pulled mine behind my ‘97 GMC Safari. I’ve done a bunch of maintenance to that vehicle over the years, but it’s been a phenomenal vehicle. Drives like a dream, too. I added a leaf to the rear springs, along with a sway bar, and a heavier sway bar up front. KYB gas-adjust shocks and it drives very well.

This item will fill two needs - porta potty and a way to get around Road America.

My truck has been a noble steed as well, it’s never let me down. I wish it had a 5.3, but I’m sure the reason I got such a good deal on it (under $22k out the door, brand new), is nobody wanted a 2wd crew cab with a 4.8. They sold so few equipped this way, that the combo isn’t even in the owners manual on the page where it lists tow ratings. I had to extrapolate to figure out it was 5700 pounds.
