My girlfriend crashed my car.

I was actually planning on writing a post about how proud I am of her driving, but now.... She got her permit on Wednesday and I let her drive the Kia on the road for her first time. She did remarkably well, so I let her drive again on Thursday. I probably shouldn’t have...

She was backing out of a parking space when the truck behind us suddenly lurched forward. He had flashed his lights at her to signal that he was letting her out, but I guess he got impatient. Anyway, she saw him moving toward us and panicked. Put the car in drive, hit the gas, forgot to turn the wheel, panicked again, and mashed the gas thinking it was the brake. We went right into the back of a parked Altima as its owner was walking up to it. I’m just thankful that this woman wasn’t already putting her groceries in the trunk or she would probably have lost her legs.

Luckily, she was very calm and understanding. My girlfriend got out of the car crying and told the other driver that she had only had her permit for a day, and the other driver told her that it happens to everyone and she shouldn’t worry about it too much. We exchanged information and both kept reassuring my girlfriend that nobody was mad at her. In the end, no report was filed, the Altima got a small scuff, and I took the majority of the (very minor) damage.

Is there anything I should do about the cracked paint to keep it from getting worse, or an I SOL on that?

Wait, your girlfriend is in her 20's (I’m assuming) and just got her permit?

Sorry to read that this happened! It’s good everyone is OK and the Kia isn’t any worse than it is

I hope this didn’t put the fear of driving into your GF. Luckily, it was a very minor accident.

Not everyone has the time, resources or capability to start learning how to drive at 16. And depending on where a person lives, you could go your entire life without ever needing or wanting to learn how to drive if there’s adequate public transportation available. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

Sorry your girlfriend freaked out, Rainbow. And I’m sorry your car got damaged. It really does happen to everyone, though. Especially at the beginning. Your g/f will likely be pretty gun shy for a while and won’t want to get behind the wheel again, so please be patient with her (I know you will, just saying it aloud, so to speak). Maybe once the shock has worn off, you guys can go for practice drives around empty parking lots so she can start building her confidence back up. Big internet hugs from afar.

Nothing. It’s just late, especially for living in the suburbs. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t have at least a permit at my point in life. With the life I live now, it’d be difficult to have to always be driven places.

Well, see. That’s what you get for deciding to exist. I warned you when we were stewing in the primordial cosmic aether that reappearing in the world would have consequences but nope, you just had a lot of livin’ to do.

On our 40th resurrection perhaps you’ll heed my warnings, but I doubt it. You never do.

Sorry to hear about that, I’m glad everyone is okay. I don’t know about the paint cracking either but have some on my car too and would be interested in the answer

Obligatory:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I had a girlfriend in high school forget there was a parking block in front of her and drive over it in her Probe. The Probe handled it surprisingly well.

20 in two months. (I’m 22) She’s getting it so late because her mom is a worthless drunk and refused to support her in any way. Her older sister and I are the only ones helping her learn to drive. It’s sad, but I’m glad to be helping her escape that mess.

Make sure to get her “back on the horse” asap. Go for a country drive or something to ease back into it. Or else you’ll be a taxi forever...

All new drivers screw up at one point or another when they’re learning. Well that’s out of the way, and nobody got hurt, nobody got a ticket, and the damage was minimal. Now get her back behind the wheel, and have her practice some more. Don’t let her chicken out; as the man said, the only thing to fear is fear itself. I’d bet money she’ll be a fine driver in no time!

In SD it’s 14! 8th graders drive to middle school. Freshman get their own lot at the highschool. Pure carnage.

When I learned how to drive I would go out with my mom in country roads. I think they’re the best place to learn. Even after a few years of driving, (full) parking lots are what make me the most nervous, even more so than highways.
