If that’s all the deeper the water was, she must’ve been going pretty quick for it to screw up her car. It’s not even pas the bumpers or the door sill.

It’s isn’t just BMW drivers. People really aren’t trained to know how deep water really is, nor does the average person know about their air intake.

In August 2014 the Detroit area got 6 inches of rain all at once, which not only are the storm drains not equipped to handle, a number of pump houses lost power. and the ones which didn’t were pumping drainwater into rivers which were already flooding over their banks. I took this photo from a parking lot in Warren, while I was chilling for a bit waiting for the water to recede:

As I was parked there, I saw all manner of cars whose drivers unwisely tried to charge through. Sonatas, Fusions, you name it. near me in the parking lot some young-ish douche was poking around under the hood of his (non-running) GTI, totally bewildered at the situation. I just stood there shaking my head every time the next person tried to barge their Camry or Malibu through the water, only to stop dead 10 feet in. I was eventually able to get through it; my Ranger has the air intake snorkel high up enough (@ the right headlamp) and I knew how deep I could ford through.

But the picture above was from the intersection of a surface street. The freeways had accumulated feet of water:

I was on one of the freeways when it got really bad, when the embankments looked like a waterfall I said “I’ve gotta get off of here now. ” luckily I had an off-ramp about 150 feet ahead so I jumped the shoulder and got the hell out of Dodge. the people who were already stuck could only get out of their cars and watch the water rise, it came that quickly.

to be fair, you’d be surprised how low some cars have the intake snorkel for the airbox. when my dad was still wrenching for a C-J-D dealer, the most frequent cars coming in with hydro-locked engines were the LX cars; the inlet was at the bottom of the airbox, right at the frame horn. 10" of water could ruin your day.

You just know she didn’t signal to get there either (and don’t ask where the money comes from).

All good points. I live somewhere with localized flash floods every year and even though people should be used to it there are always cars getting stuck. Of all makes and models. In fact it seems most often to be pickups that the owners think are somehow invincible. I was mainly commenting on how BMW (and to be fair Audi and Infiniti) drivers are a stereotype for this kind of behavior and with all of the similar photos that the news could’ve run in a big storm with multiple rescues they went with this one that just helps perpetuate it.

We get flash floods here pretty often. A few things I’ve learned that could be at play here:

- Water levels can rise and fall very quickly. The water could’ve been higher when she got stuck.

- With that much water on the road, there is no way to tell how where the road surface is. There could’ve been a dip that she hit that dropped the car low enough to suck in water and that’s just where it coasted to a stop.

- Things hide under the water. Car could still be running but she could be high-centered on a tree or pipe or something like that or just have the rear wheels on something slick that washed in there and not be able to get traction. With water rising it would be more prudent to GTFO than keep trying to get the car moving.

- Like JimZ said, some cars just have the intake mounted incredibly low. Alternatively, something under the water could’ve busted the oil pan or something like that killing it rather than sucking in water.

I don’t get why she needs to be carried from the car. Just get out and walk lady, I mean really, it’s not that deep.
