I had a chance to see them back in ‘89 or ‘90, for free! But my friend who’s dad had the ticket hook-up (and they were really good seats in the arena), did a bunch of acid when his parents were out of town. They came home and found him hiding in the bushes in front of their house. He was dressed like Rambo and was armed with some sort of staff or pole. He was defending the house from something... and he told his parents that his Iron Maiden posters were talking too him. So his mom calls my mom... I start getting the third degree. My mom calls my very conservative uncle over to look at my posters and tell me how bad they were. My mom didn’t realize how much of a history buff my uncle was. He saw my poster for “The Trooper”, read the lyrics, and explained the Crimean War to my mom. He didn’t like the music, but was taken by the lyrics. My mom never pestered me about my musical choices after that. But my friend got himself in a world of trouble (skipping school for several day to hide in your bushes while on acid tends to get one in trouble), so no tickets to the show. I even had the balls to ask his dad if I could still have my ticket. Nope. Oh well. The Trooper is still my jam. It’s been playing in my head on repeat for almost 30 years.
