I don’t know what to do. I want to work on my Dakota, dad says no putting money in it. I want to get an 80s Ram. Dad says no. Dad says I can’t have two trucks. I want two trucks. I don’t want to get rid of Kipper, he’s my first car and my Pappaw got him for me.

But I do want an 80s Ram. They’re just so cool, so full of character. I can’t win. My money’s in a savings account, which I can’t access because no state ID. (17, no license). Which means Dad controls it. Then if I DO buy one after getting a license, Dad’s head will explode.

Oppo, what do I do? A picture of a 1969 Super Bee for your time

Man this is tough

This won’t help much atm, true, but it’s time for the long game. Maybe do your best now to plan ahead?

This is a promise — if you’re patient and avoid doing *anything* now to interfere with getting what you want later (like; make sure you hang on the truck you got from your pappaw, and *do* keep your dad in your corner) — do this and your time will come. When it’s finally here it’ll be so awesome it’ll make the part now be all right somehow. Promise

What’s the rush? You’ll be 18 soon. Wait a few months, and you’ll be 100% in charge of your own life. Also, if you wait a little while, you can save up even more money for modifications!

On the positive side it sounds like if you play things right for the present, you’ll be in pole position before all that long to arrange things how you want ‘em :)

Sounds like it is time for a serious conversation. If your dad won’t let you fix your truck, and he won’t let you get a different truck, ask him what he wants you to do instead.

Also go with the “It’s my hard-earned money” trick. 100% effective on parents.

Well, it isn’t hard earned. Christmas money (Yes, I’m spoiled.) Also, it’s not fixing my truck, it runs and drives. It’s building it up (fixing rust, V8, etc.).

Plus, we’re both stubborn as hell and I’m just like him. We go in circles when talking about it. It’s also not getting a different truck, it’s the type of truck. Too old, he says.

That sounds a lot like the money is actually you dads’s. It’s fine, save money and get what you want one day. You’re in high school, you’ve got plenty of time.

You’d think it is, but I swear it’s mine. The minute I get my license, I’m probably going to.... well, think about buying a truck.

I think you are just SOL then. Your dad is forcing you to make the “responsible choice”, there isn’t any convincing them. I had the hard earned money card working since I was 15, also demonstrated that I was able to save for things.

He’ll probably lighten up after graduation.

Long run, it might not be worth it.You know how much school costs? Let me put it this way, I got an M3 within a year of starting my job. Think about the future. If your parents can pay for both college and a truck, get them to do that.

Kinja'd!!! "19JRC99" (19jrc99)

I don’t want them to pay for anything, though. Plus, the trucks I want are all 30 years old and can be had for under $5k. Probably less than $3500 if I’m lucky.

Possibly applicable: my first car, my Park Avenue, was a hastily bought compromise which I didn’t agree to. I wanted a Cadillac DeVille. It was a rusty mess, so I beat on it until the engine cradle detached from the body. Ended up forcing my fathers hand so he had to let me get another car because the Buick was no longer drivable or safe. Perhaps the Dakota needs to be temporarily disabled?

Patience young grasshopper, patience. I made the mistake of buying my first nice car too soon when I should have waited a year or two, it took me till my third vehicle to actually pay off that first purchase due to rolling in negative equity and all that stupid kid shit we do.

So just hang tight for a bit and play the long game.

I had to be patient when I first got married and bless my wife cause she os the only reason we are wher we are financially now and living very comfortably. But the first couple years were tough. But now I’ve owed and sold off a first gen cts-v, a ‘12 audi S4 6mt, and am currently DDing an ‘09 S8, and I still have my ‘99 Dakota RT that I had before my wife and I got married (that one just so happens to be the one I actually paid off my first two cars with). Patience pays off. So play nice with your pops. You’ll find that the older you get, the smarter he gets too.

Until you’re on your own, you’re just going to have to deal with it. The bad news is, your dad is right. The good news is, in the seeming blink of an eye you will be on your own, and there will be plenty of 80's Rams to buy.

Yeah, I joke that I’ve had my truck longer than my wife, so I can’t get rid of it. I want to hang onto it to be able to have it for my sons to drive, but they’re a long way off, my oldest is 4.

It doesn’t hurt to hang onto them, just don’t drop a bunch of cash in it right now, just maintain and keep it clean, then down the road once you have another primary mode of transport, you can start playing with it. No rush. I’m still debating on if I want to swap in a srt or hellcat power train into mine, but that’s for another time once my boys are old enough to spin wrenches with me. So until then, I just keep it running and tidy, nothing more, nothing less.

I’d just keep the 5.9. Slap a Hughes FI Air Gap on it to have some actual power above 4800RPM.

Yeah, I’m still not sure how crazy I want to get with it. It has long tube headers and the mopar pcm, and electric fan, so it’s about as good as I’m going to get it for now. I would like to find an m1 intake on the cheap, but other than that, no more mods for a while. The stroker kits seem to be a nice way to go, but for now it all good. It funny how it used to seem so fast, but since I’ve expanded my performance lineup through the years, the old girl is feeling a little sluggish. But it’s just the perception. After the S4 and now the S8, nothing seems very quick in comparison.

The mopar pcm and the headers really open up the top end, but keeping the old beer barrel intake, I don’t lose the down low grunt either.

The Hughes one is designed to keep the low end grunt, but open the top end. Hell of a lot better than the M1, supposedly.

Sounds like a winner then. I know the M1 had its drawbacks. I was waiting for the gasket to fail on the bottom of the beer barrel to give me an excuse to do an intake, but that never happened, then I stopped driving it on the daily, so it’s now my toy. I’ll look into the Hughes, sounds like I might have a new spring project :).

if it were me........ AND IT IS NOT ME........ what I would do, if all my cash money were tied up in the bank, and i couldnt touch it, is i would start liquidating other “assets” at my disposal, until i was able to liquidate/ convert enough to fund the truck. that and take up side jobs in the immediate neighborhood. cutting yards and such. just keep your new funds cash money, and out of the bank. where there is a will, there is a way. work from there.......

I’m 19 and I think you should try to see things from your dad’s perspective. Life might pass by faster and faster but you’ve got a lot ahead of you still, I wouldn’t try to take on more than what you can take (financially speaking). I had some things happen to my family and I think it’s help shape the way I think about money. Maybe he’s trying to teach you something (ask?)

Enjoy the car now, you most likely will not have it forever. Work on it, drive it, whatever. My mom had to get rid of the first car I started driving (a car I shared with my mom and sis but I drove it the most) and when it’s time to move on you will be more financially free I guess.

I do know how it is, and let me tell you. A couple years from now, no one will care or even remember what you parked in the High School parking lot. I’m obsessed with cars, and the only car from High School that I remember is the one I drove. Save your money, and see what the future holds. Maybe the future holds and even better V8 that you’ll be more able to afford and willing to spend money on. You won’t regret it.

This is going to sound dumb, but....

Someday I’m going to have a son or daughter who’s likely to love cars as much as I do. At some point, they’re going to ask what daddy drove in high school. I want to be able to say that Daddy had a loud, bad ass V8 powered Dodge. I love my Dakota, but to me, a V6 just isn’t cool. (I grew up around old muscle cars, the only V6 I’ve ever gave a damn about is the Buick turbo V6 from the Grand Nationals).

So why not just V8 swap the Dakota? Because Dad, of course!

Again, I know that’s a flimsy reason, but I’m a nostalgic fool. Even at 17.

Kinja'd!!! "Justino6969" (justino6969)
02/21/2017 at 08:26, STARS: 1

I don’t want to sound rude, and please don’t take offense to this, but it’s a Dakota. The words bad ass Dodge don’t apply to Dakotas, unless it’s the 5.9 R/T, and even then, it’s a strong meh. I drove a Sierra 2500HD with the 8.1L V8, and even that wasn’t bad ass.

I remember you saying it has a rust issue. What happens if you do the swap and then the frame snaps, or the cab falls off?

I’m not trying to come off as a dick. Listen to the others here; save your money for things that matter more than an engine swap. Fix the issues at hand and run your truck to the ground, while saving up for the best 80s Ram you can find, and then do the swap of your choice when you’re older and in a better place financially.

Ready for the really scary part? What if by the time you have kids, V8s aren’t cool anymore?

Kinja'd!!! "19JRC99" (19jrc99)
02/21/2017 at 17:40, STARS: 0

I’m saying that’s why I want an ‘80s Ram. Also, I’ve seen a few bad ass Dakotas. The rust issue is purely body. Mostly the bed. The frame isn’t rotted just yet.
