Came home this evening and hit the power button to wake up the ol’ Optiplex. It started out normal but never got to the screen where I’m supposed to enter my password. It was unresponsive for several minutes and then I got a BSOD with the error INACCESIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. Huh? Nothing has changed in the machine lately other than the installation of a game or two.

I’ve tried booting into safe mode, but I get the same error. I tried whatever they now call the last known good configuration, but that doesn’t do anything either. It says it’s trying to repair the problem (yeah, right) but I get stuck in this same cycle of error and reboot. All extra hardware devices have been unplugged. All other SATA ports other than 0 have been disabled. SATA mode is set to AHCI. What am I missing? What do I need to do to get this PoS running again? HELP!

See if it works by setting SATA mode to IDE/compatible

Can you boot into recovery?

I have a feeling Windows 10's auto update screwed up something.

How many sticks of ram, do you have, try removing one, then another.

Sounds to me like your hard drive could be dying. Get a bootable CD or USB drive and run a diagnostic on that hard drive.

Sounds like your hard drive bit the dust to me.

There’s two ways INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE can happen.

The first way is that the OS can’t communicate with the boot device due to a driver issue. That would happen very quickly, though.

The second way is that there’s a problem with the boot device - as in, your hard drive is dead.

Seeing as it’s an OptiPlex, start mashing F12 as soon as you power it on, and then hit Diagnostics. I’m about 90% sure your drive will fail the short test, and if not that, 99% sure it’ll fail the long test.

Remove drive from tower and put it in your freezer for an hour or so, then quickly reinstall and see if it will boot.

If it does, your HDD is on it’s way out. If it doesn’t, then it may or may not be a hdd issue.

that sounds alot like your OS drive took a crap. you’ll need a windows 10 install disc or a bootable USB drive(if you have a second PC and a 4+GB USB drive, MS has a tool to create one that you can download for free )

That means it can’t read the hard drive. It tries to boot but can’t find an operating system to boot up, or it starts to boot and then can’t read the files it needs.

As soon as the Mazda5 is paid off, a new(er) Mac is in my future. I love my mini, but it’s a 2009 model and feeling a tad sluggish these days.

I tried some of the steps in that article and it says it can’t find any Windows installations. Uh oh. Running diagnostics now.

12gb total. May try simplifying hardware later since this feels more like a software issue.

Could always try Linux on the Optiplex instead. I’ve been running a Win10 gaming desktop and a Linux laptop for a few years, and I’ve had less problems with Linux than I’ve had with Windows (though I’ve actually had very few problems with Windows, luckily). It can be a little finicky to set up some stuff, but once it’s set up, I’ve never really had problems at all.

Linux doesn’t cost anything and as long as you make backups if your files for safety (which you should be doing no matter what OS you have), you could always give it a whirl? It also runs better on older hardware than Windows tends to in my experience. What’s the specs on the Optiplex?

I had many Bsod because of ram.

Does your BIOS detect your hard drive?

No problems there. I’m running a thorough scan on it now and so far it’s perfect. I did an extended RAM check and that too passed with flying colors.

I’ve seen the “INACCESIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE” come up when the storage configuration changes. Either the storage controller changed modes (SATA, AHCI, RAID, etc.) or I/O port/IRQ/DMA, or the boot disk was moved from one port to another, or the boot partition was moved. Or perhaps something was attached, say a bootable USB device. Basically you’ll need to roll back any config changes, which includes attaching fobs to the USB ports.

This sort of thing used to be a lot easier with the old BIOS interface and Windows boot loader. UEFI and the Windows Boot Manager (since Vista) have made storage management a black art.

Another interesting development with rebuilding the BCD. At first it didn’t find anything but then I went through the rebuild steps and it found an install on drive E:. I don’t think I have an E drive. Why didn’t it find it on the C: drive? This might explain why it can’t boot since it thinks the install is on a different drive, but now I need to know how to make it think the install is on the the C drive.

Just one man’s opinion, but drive letters are stupid and useless and should have died in the ‘70s. They are a quick and simple solution and have outlived their usefulness and need to go away.

Optiplex 980 with Core i5 680 and 12GB RAM. 9800GT video card. 500W ATX power supply. 2 1GB drives and 2 DVD burners. It’s older, but still holds its own.

I’ve got Linux installed on another system but I don’t use it all that much. After years as a network engineer I’m tired of tweaking and optimizing computers and just want to fire something up and have it run common apps and games without fuss (I know - why did I go with Windows if that’s what I was after...) At least with Windows I can generally find plenty of support and solutions to common problems without a lot of attitude, albeit there are too many children that spout solutions based on buzzwords without a thorough understanding of the issues; how many times have these kids told me I need some fancy modular power supply or goofy sticks of RAM to solve my problem without understanding what is really going on. Specs, brand names and benchmarks don’t mean squat to me, only results matter in my world.

I would give some help, except I’m one of the 3.7 souls to have no issues with windows 10. Hell, I had no problems with Vista, and all I heard was that Vista was the worst and buggiest windows till 10 rolled on in.

Well I think that’s an issue if you use the old style MBR install, newer installations uses UEFI GPT which avoids the issue altogether.
