It’s 1990 Toyota Crown... Manual!! I plan on offering it with a starting bid of 3500$, shipping to any Ro-Ro port in the world included in the price, and no reserve (so even if it sells for 3500$ only, shipping will be included in that price).

The manual is a true unicorn, let alone with only 45000 km on the clock and looking this perfect. I did a full test drive and walk around video for the sale too... This car is a sooooo smooth. Like... SMOOTH!

Do you think the auction will work? Any idea what price it will end up selling for? (Hopefully not 3500$ :) )

Very nice!!! I would love to get a JDM import of some sort someday, but the 126 comes first! That being said, getting insurance for anything RHD here is nigh on impossible! :(

You’re in NS right? Usually, Canada is not much of a problem for a RHD cars... I don’t know all the provinces but Ontario and BC are no problem at all. QC with its ban on RHD cars 15 to 25 years old is more annoying but still, insurance is reasonnable.

Is 3.5k the break even point or are you making a loss?

Yup, NS. Getting them here and registering them / etc isn’t an issue at all, but very few insurance companies around here will insure them....the main companies that is (Economical, Intact, etc) will either refuse, or charge you 9 billion dollars and the soul of your firstborn child.

I imagine one could go through a specialty company like Hagerty or some such, but not sure how that would work for one for Daily Driver duty...

I wouldn’t mind importing a low mileage Bugeye Impreza wagon sometime like my old 2002 Impreza 2.5TS. I know they never had the NA 2.5 on JDM market cars, so I guess a WRX or non-1.5L/FWD version of it would be perfectly fine to me as long as parts were still easy to get here.

....either that or something reliable but quirky. I do quite like the Toyota Caldina GT...

There is a loss, but not TOO bad... I’m fairly confident the car will sell for more which is why I decided to go for such a low price. I got an insane deal on it...

No, I have seen a lot start in the thousands... Usually low thousands, but thousands nonetheless... I would set a 3500$ reserve if it does anyway.

It is the nicest I’ve ever seen... I have also done a 30 minutes walkaround vidoe of the car with driving and so on... I’ll post it later for those who are motivated :)

Well if you ever want something, let me know, the only Ro-Ro port in eastern Canada is Halifax so... :)

I’m more used to seeing these with a column manual shifter though... childhood memory for me. They use these as taxis in Hong Kong back in the early 90s.

Really cool pic, it’s like a red version of the Japanese taxis

They do use the same models, actually. But in Hong Kong, the colour of the taxis are fixed:

Red - Urban, but can operate through entire Hong Kong
Green - Restricted to the New Territories
Blue - Restricted to Lantau Island

It should sell for a fair amount more in that condition. I hope you make good money on it for selfish reasons - I’m not in the market now but would like to see more of these auctions.

Nope, anything you want can be found in Japan :)

LHD European cars too...

02/17/2017 at 21:53, STARS: 0

Maybe so, but probably at significantly more than they could be had from Europe! (For example, FIAT 126s I see in Japan on Goonet are like 10K, minus shipping, whereas I could get one for like 5K shipped from Poland)

Yeah Fiat are not common... But BMW, Mercedes Renault Citroen Porsche...Etc etc are plentiful and cheaper. Also Goo is expensive as the sellers are dealers. I don’t but my cars like this :)

The only quirky Euro car it probably wouldn’t be too hard to find that I would want and fits my weird style would be the 2CV...how much do they run for in Japan?

Kinja'd!!! "Flavien Vidal" (flyingfrenchy)
02/17/2017 at 22:38, STARS: 0

That would depend on the model and condition but from 1000 to 8000$ at auctions. Most expensive being the very first generation ones... Or nice Charlestons.

Nicely preserved car, is a manual any fun in something like this, or more of a chore? Definitely a bargain at this price. Just gotta wait for the V12 Century to be eligible for US consumption.

Interesting interior style, reminds me of the traditional MB velour:

Fairly certain it was extensively copied on Mercedes for that :)

As for the gearbox, I love it! It’s a genuinely great one and not a core at all... If you the kind of guy who enjoys rev-matching and heel and toeing for no reasons, you’ll have tons of fun with this one :)

So do you do broker type stuff?

Kinja'd!!! "Flavien Vidal" (flyingfrenchy)
02/18/2017 at 01:38, STARS: 0

Not for the reception of the cars no... I’m in Japan so you’d have to find your own broker or simply import it entirely yourself (that would save you 2 or 300$). As for the cars leaving Japan yes, I’d be taking care of everything to get it out on the sea! (well, I take care of the communication with the buyer, my friend takes care of the formalities for a proper exportation from Japan)

Wouldn’t be the first time for Toyota :)

Easy like a Honda then? Just seems like a relatively dull handling car for a manual, reminds me of the idea of a W116-126-140 with a manual (they exist). I suppose on the right road, any manual can be fun. In my grinding commute though, I don’t mind the car doing it for me :)

Kinja'd!!! "Flavien Vidal" (flyingfrenchy)
02/18/2017 at 01:46, STARS: 0

It revs pretty fast, I genuinely like it :) Then again, I’m kind of anti-automatics in cars, heavy traffic during daily commute or not, so I might not be the right person to tell you if you’d prefer the automatic version for that. I know I’d go for the manual at any cost really so...

The advantage of the automatic is the engine. Manual were only available with the 2L straight-six, while autos had the 4 liters 1UZ-FE V8. Still, I would go with the 2L straight-six because manual :)

I would be looking for one that wasn’t in perfect shape, but wasn’t rusty and was in drivable condition! :) Pristine-ness isn’t super important! :P

My commute averages ~20 kph, and is red light after red light, with the extra fun bonus of hills, and incompetent drivers who might veer in front of you at any time. After 9-10 hours at work, I’m often not in the mood.

A tiny I6 might be fun to rev though - my fintail is a 2.2 I6, and it is amazingly free revving for something of its age. It kind of has to be, as such displacement doesn’t make torque. It is an automatic (the first made by MB), and it is weird, but OK. I often do the 3-4 change manually, as it upshifts too soon and downshifts too late.
