Kinja'd!!!

I have never seen a Mercedes in this colour, I have no idea if it’s original, but judging by the interior, it probably is. Aaand someone decided to cut a hole in the hood, and route the exhaust out of it. No cover or anything, because rain is good for turbos. This thing is unique and cheap enough I’d be tempted to buy it, but not with that hood, it’s not worth it to get a new hood, repaint it, and get a full exhaust. The interior picture is in the comments, because kinja won’t format anything properly on mobile.

Because it is always a good idea to dump your sooty diesel exhaust right in front of your windshield.

Don’t care. Still want it.

The best idea. My goal has always been to never be able to roll the passenger side windows down, and also to get pulled over constantly

I want it, but I don’t know if I’d even make it home before I got pulled over and got a VI

if you were their neighbor it would be funny to install a tractor flap for them while they were not paying attention.....you know, to help them out.......

Could be an original color, hard to tell. Early W126 could be had in a few kind of loud (but period correct) colors:

Upholstery is not original in texture anyway.

Ha, before I bought my 300d, I talked with a friend that had a 300SD and he’d done the same thing. I’m not saying I get it, but these things aren’t like, incredibly rare or thaaat sought after, so eh, to each their own.

But blowing soot into the windshield, incredibly stupid.

Oh it’s not? It matches the carpet and trim though, maybe it was a special order? I know BMW had/has the Individual options, maybe Mercedes had something similar

getting pulled over for having dirty, unsafe, loud, broken, suspicious vehicles gets old after about the 6th or 7th time. after you get the routine down things go pretty smooth.......

Yeah it just seems really stupid to me, I can understand it being kind of fun, but at least use a pipe long enough to get it blowing away from the car, with a flap or a bend so rain doesn’t get in it. I don’t understand why he’d devalue the car so much intentionally either. I sure as hell wouldn’t pay $1500 for it with that hack job, he shouldn’t get more than $1000 for it, if the turbo isn’t already rusting. You’re right that they aren’t rare, but they seem to hold their value surprisingly well around here, except this one lol

Yea my friend did have a trucker flap on it, but it made the smoke blow even more directly onto the windshield.

$1500 seems about right for it though if everything else is fine. The values around here (CA) are all over the place. There will be two seemingly similar cars, one selling at $2000 and one at $4500.

Excellent.

You can get a very high miles one like that, in decent shape for $2000-$2500, and low miles ones for $4000-$5000, and 350SDs are like $8000-$10000. They stay weirdly consistent in those ranges, so I’m just going by that, and tacking on the cost of getting exhaust installed and a new hood repainted. But maybe he’ll be helped out by the unique colour combo, that’s the only reason I even kind of want it

Ahh yea I guess when I thought about fixing the exhaust I forgot about the hood.

These “Fehlfarben” aka weird colour choices are actually worth extra money among Mercedes collectors. Everybody has a silver, grey, blue, or black one, so the rare colours are the only way to stand out if you have a fetish for originality (also very common for Merc guys, some tend to throw out original extras like power windows if they are retrofitted and not on the original build sheet).

It could also be patched and painted, but I doubt that would be cheaper than getting a hood from a wrecker

Cool, I didn’t know that. That makes it even more annoying that this one has a hole cut in the hood

Nope. Cloth was possible, but this isn’t it. There were 2 kinds of cloth possible on W126 - a plain cloth as would be found on an ordinary car, and a woolcloth velour resembling something from the 40s, which started on the Adenauers if not before. The latter could be special ordered as a no-cost option on top spec US cars, at least after 1985, but I think a 300SD like this had two options - Tex or leather. The original interior probably just wore out or looked bad, and was replaced with this. It looks well done, but is not correct. There’s no way a cloth car with that mileage would look so good anyway, cloth decomposes.

Looks like $500 Lemons car to me... I wouldn’t pay $1500 for that heap.

Yep could be, also maybe “apricot orange”. These somewhat garish colors weren’t unknown on MBs into the early 80s. 70s ones can be even more fun - yellow with green interior etc.
