Idea: An interesting twist on the racing simulator.

As it’s pretty well known, racing simulator games are quite popular around here.

I’ve done some thinking and have come up with an interesting idea for one.

The game would function a lot like a Gran Turismo or a Forza Motorsport, but the car list would have two requirements:

1. The cars would have to have had been entered in a professional racing series. Could be touring cars, GT3, rally, etc.

2. In order to get the cars, they have to be upgraded from stock form into the full racing versions, and in order to do that, you have to level the car up itself.

That means upgrades would correspond to a specific vehicle level and you have to race and rank up in order to be able to use those upgraded parts.

Every car would have to start as a street legal car from the factory, so that pretty much exclude prototypes like the Cadillac DPi-V.R and Audi R18, but would allow ones like the Nissan R390 GT1, Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, various versions of the McLaren F1, and the Porsche 911 GT1.

So, with those regulations in place, which cars would be great additions to such a game?

So I don’t have to cram my post with my suggestions, here’s a list of ones I’d add:

Nissan Fairlady Z432R - Many games, including simulators, tend to use the homologated ZG (which would also be included). Makes sense, given it was built to satisfy Group 4 regulations.

The Z432R, on the other hand, was not only homologated for rally, but ditched it’s L20 for the S20 out of the KPGC10 Skyline GT-R. (I forgot to mention that rally would be in the game as well as circuit racing.)

Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 - Like the Buick Grand National and Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe, the 2+2 had a connection to NASCAR in the 80's. While the GN was a celebration of success, the Aerocoupe and 2+2 were homologation specials, in order for their brands to use the fastback rear window in competition.

Kinja'd!!!

Mazda Familia GT-Ae - One of three homologation specials built by Mazda in order to compete in rally. They were the GT-R, GT-X, and GT-Ae.

The GT-R was more powerful than the GT-X (210PS vs 185PS), and also featured stronger connecting rods and pistons, larger oil squirters, larger nose crank, larger oil cooler, sodium filled valves, a baffled inlet manifold, larger injectors (from 360cc (black) to 440cc (orange)), removed boost cut, front-mounted intercooler, and an IHI VJ-23 ball bearing water-cooled turbocharger.

The GT-Ae, though...was even better. Limited to 300 units, it took the engine of the GT-R, the lighter cloth interior of the GTX, was 66lbs lighter, and had a lot of wiring removed (ABS, A/C, power mirrors, power windows, power locks, and sunroof).

Can agree.

Also, I forgot to mention another thing. The amount of levels each car has and how fast or slow a car could level up depends on how close to the race car the street car is.

That means that a McLaren F1 would have less levels to go to become the full race car, but each level would go slower.

In contrast, the Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 would have more levels, due to how distant it is to the NASCAR stock car, but each level would go by a bit quicker.

What you’ve described sounds like what happens @ the club racing level with the SCCA/NASA series. I can see Speed World Challenge or Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge working for a game like this. These are series where the cars are still production derived but allow for some pretty wild stuff.

Prius GT300.

Insert leftover LMP1 parts here. (The engine’s an RV8K, which has done LMP1 duty in the back of a Rebellion...)

Best part is, you even get a level after upgrading to the actual GT300-spec race car, to replace the stock Prius battery with what I’ve heard is an ex-LMP1 supercapacitor bank. (Only one of the two cars had the supercap, the other had a production Li-ion battery.)

This would be pretty interesting actually, like an RPG where you build your character but the character is a car...
