Also, the owner of the shop, who doesn’t come in on Fridays, just called to have ONE OF THE TECHNICIANS come start his home generator because his power is out. 20 miles away. You know, one of our three technicians who do work on customer cars, which are promised done at a given time, in exchange for their dollars, which keeps the business open. FFS.

Tangent, but I’ve gotta ask. How big of a generator does it take to power a house? Or does it just power the kitchen or something? ‘Cause it seems like an entire house generator would be pretty impractical cost wise, but one for the kitchen would be pretty handy for extended outages.

My dad sells and installs natural gas powered automatic standby generators. Obviously it depends on the size of the house, a whole house can typically run on a 14-20 kw generator. I’ve got an 8 kw at my house (got it for free when a customer decided to upgrade!), and it can run my fridge, the most important lights, my modem/router, my furnace blower motor, and even one of my air conditioners.
Some of the newer systems have smart switches. Those let you have literally anything in the house powered, just not all at once. I’ll get one of those someday.
Cost is typically between $5-10k installed, which is a healthy investment, but if you live in an area that gets power outages frequently, or have medical needs that require constant electricity, they can be well worth it.

A whole house with full function would probably require over 10k Watts, but just keeping some essentials alive could probably be done on 5k, less if all you want is the fridge.

If it was mine I’d be out in it, how else are you going to hoon an R8 at legal speeds? The owner has been taking Fridays off for years, it’s his feeble attempt at semi-retirement. It’s easier for Steven and I to run the place without him there, we have differing ideas about how modern customer service works and we’re more efficient. He comes in Saturdays on his errands to smoke a cigarette in the office and dick around on his computer for a bit.
