My ‘74 World of Automobiles encyclopedia actually singles out the ‘68 Caddy as a design triumph that would stand the test of time. While it hasn’t had the iconic recognition of the ‘59 in the years since, it *is* one of Cadillac’s high points of elegance.

The 59 always struck me as a bit of a caricature though. I always thought that the ‘60 (which is still closely related to the 59) was far more beautiful.

The ’68 is more understated elegance — love it, especially in convertible form.

I’d argue it’s more elegant than the ‘59, only because it’s more restrained. The ‘59 is just... HAVE YOU SEEN THESE FUCKING FINS?!?

The ‘59 would be better with about 2" less fin - there, I said it. It does have, though, one extremely beautiful styling touch I think is unique to it - the trail of the fin-top trim into the door trim. Not often noticed or remarked on, but helps sell the whole package.

They are well considered, as big-ass free-standing fins go. The taillights in the fins always sold me on them. Still, a bit shouty.

The ‘57/’58 fins, on the other hand, are a more elegant *shape* despite being a bit more overworked and less elegant in some other respects. I think that’s because on them it looks like there’s a reason for the fins to be that shape. I can’t articulate it better than that - it looks as if as part of the overall aircraft(if you will) that there was a reason for that exact shape, the bob, everything. It’s more obvious on the ‘59 that the fin is there for no reason, if you know what I mean.

The ‘59 is tricky because the front end is a bit more complicated than it needs to be (still carrying some styling from the ‘58), and while putting on giant fins they put in a kink instead of either a straight top edge or a curve. I’m not sure it works. The ‘60 improves on the whole program on multiple fronts with more smoothing to the front design, an improved top line on the fin, etc.... and then creates a problem of its own in looking a bit too bulky in the lower rear quarter. Takes the fuselage styling in just slightly the wrong direction, IMO.

It’s a little more *together* and sane than the ‘59, but it didn’t get made into an icon.

The ‘58 Eldo Brougham is one of my all time favorite cars. Those fins flow much better in to the car, and I think if they had a trim strip running the length of the fender like the ‘59 they’d be perfect. Saw this one on the local concours field awhile back.

Agreed - the one thing I would say about the bulkiness in the lower rear quarter of the ‘60, is that the ‘59 has pretty much the same issue - - but the outrageous fins distract you from looking at it. I love old cars, especially GM, but they went a little overboard in 1959 - across the board.

The lines on the 68 are simple yet stately. I am surprised it doesn’t cost more.

That’s a favorite film of mine, though Dan Akroyd is a truly bad, but lovable, actor.

Definitely some things to feel good about, if you like to feel good about things. And some very good actors, except for Mr. Akroyd, who I still enjoy in that film.
