You’re telling me that the unibody evoque convertible [4525 lbs] weighs 200 lbs MORE than the body on frame solid axles 4 door wrangler rubicon [4340 lbs]?

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Here are the two side by side for comparison

I actually like the Evoque convertible, my only wish is that it had a two speed t-case.

Yeah, but to put it in perspective, that’s only 4.6%. Because now 2 door, 4 seat convertibles should weigh more than my 8 person minivan.

To be fair the LR has a luxury interior and acessories. The Jeep is just some plastic stadium seating and flimsy doors.

whats intesting is that it uses the same AWD system as the KL cherokee but Jeep has exclusive rights to the 2 speed version for a set number of years. it could be made to be a real off roader.

“Convertible unibody” with modern safety standards means pepper your angus where weight is concerned. With little or no normal benefit from roof strength, they have to add a frame back on via unibody structure additions - in other words, you can think of it as having to take a unibody car *and then putting it on a frame*, as opposed to just putting “a body” on a frame. If said unibody platform is already a lardo, then the effect is magnified.

In the old days one would just add stiffening until the doors quit jamming.

Those roll bars on the Land Rover add a lot of mass.

The Venn Diagram of people cross-shopping the two probably looks like a pair of boobs. Unibodies can get heavy quickly, especially with all the bracing they have to do for convertibles. Anyway, the new Evoque makes me suddenly appreciate my neighbor’s Murano CrossCabriolet a little more.

Oh I’m not saying they are being cross shopped, I just want to know why a 2 door unibody coupe weighs a couple of passengers away from my 7 seat land cruiser.

Luxury trappings add very little weight.

I get that, still...man alive thats a lot of lard for a 2 seat city runabout with a 2.0 engine.

Who knows, once that runs out maybe we’ll see Evoques with lo-range (I hope this happens).

I don’t get the hate on the Evoque. It’s no less an off roader than the Renegade or Cherokee because let’s face it, the vast majority of people buying those aren’t heading out to Moab. At least with the Evoque, I can drop the roof when I drive onto the beach.

I doubt we’ll see a low range evoque. Land Rover is under no false assumptions that their evoque buyers want anything to do with the outdoors

I guess it all depends on platform sharing and if it brings down the cost per unit.

Lets not mince words though, if they made the LR2 with a 2 speed system...and well...I would have bought one.

Hell, even the disco sport would be pretty cool with a 2 speed system. The evoque is just not that car.

So this is a case of added complexity increases weight.

True it’s not now, but people wheel Freelanders these days. Hell even the Land Rover rags are starting to come out with how to’s for turning Freelanders into cheap off road toys.

I’m pretty sure we’ll see people wheeling Disco Sports and Evoques at some point in the next 10 years and Land Rover is well aware that their vehicles are truly taken off road around the 3rd owner anyway.

There is a good chance I’m wrong but then again McGovern can’t stay head designer for ever.

From the wiki “Engineers used advanced weight saving techniques to bring the total kerb weight down to under 1,670 kg (3,680 lb). The use of aluminium for the bonnet and the roof, and composite plastics for the one-piece tailgate helped produce a vehicle weighing 100 kg (220 lb) less than the Freelander .”

Hahaha, advanced weight saving techniques. That’s like drinking a diet coke with your Big Mac.
