Our CX-5 is a total base model. So, no XM or anything like that. It does have Bluetooth, but we often listen to FM since our local stations aren’t bad.

However, the radio has become a bit odd recently.

The vehicle has been mostly sitting in the garage since our son Chandler was born on the 8th, but we drove it yesterday, and the radio has sucked since. Every station is full of static and there is a high pitched whine in the background of each station as well. Any ideas? Literally nothing has happened to the radio or antenna as far as I know.

I drove it to the hospital a couple times and it stayed in the parking lot overnight once (since we had to stay with our kid in the NICU, I was going back and forth from hospital to home to get supplies). I never noticed anything odd like someone running into the vehicle or something, though.

I’m assuming a plug on the back of the radio has come loose? Or maybe the antenna itself has come loose. My wife hit the garage door  with it a few months ago and knocked it loose, but my friend pulled the headliner down and tightened it back up for me and it’s been fine since. Until now.

Mmmmm I love that colour.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the antenna’s become disconnected in some way. At one point, my 2012 smart’s radio had a similar issue, though such was made worse when the volume decided to go “fuck all” to any volume change input. Volume up was simultaneously both up and down at the same time! And volume down was mostly volume down, though right near mute it would go up again.

Got the stupid thing replaced under warranty.

What year is the CX-5?

Wife’s got the same car, haven’t had any problems with the radio signal yet, but a couple of time the touchscreen has frozen up and not responded to anything, along with the steering wheel controls.

Make sure the wires going to it aren’t damaged or have become loose. Those use power to amplify the signal, right?

Thanks! It is “Stormy Blue Mica.” Mazda has since replaced it with “Deep Crystal Blue Mica”, which is the color my 6 is.

It’s a 2013. Built October 2012 and bought December 2012.

Since the antenna was damaged I’d look there first. If I recall since it has a circuit board in it so if that’s damaged it might affect reception. Or one of the wires might have fallen off.

But how did it work fine since then for about 4-5 months and then all of a sudden quit?

The car world needs more exciting colours. Does your 6 have the LED DRLs? I’ve noticed a lot of newer Mazdas in my area seem to have glitchy DRLs, with one side being out, dim, or flickering. Makes me worry about my new smartie.

Nope. Only the Grand Touring 6s have the LEDs. I just have regular halogen ones.

Does the whine pitch up with engine revs? If so, that could mean a bad ground.

Are those projector housings I see? *grumbles about how new smarts have these ugly reflectors, even in the top LED package*
