All timing belt designs should be sent to the phantom zone.

This is why I consider it a blessing that I don’t like Audis. I can’t even...

gotta admit he’s right about the thermostat placement, it shouldn’t be that difficult.

Yup. That is about the size of it. I have an S4 track toy (which currently has electrical gremlins).

BMs and Mercs for me, thanks.

It isn’t so much that they are morons as they just don’t care. Why would they? The timing belt, thermostat, water pump, etc. are all designed to last longer than the warranty. Up until that point, the manufacturer is on the hook to cover the cost of warranty repairs. After that point, the owner gets to foot those bills. So, why would the manufacturer’s engineers care how complicated or costly those jobs are?

The German car marketing model demands that you trade in your car every 2 or 3 years for a new one. Only fools worry about owning older German cars in their minds.

At least that belt is serviceable while inside the engine bay... the newer chain driven ones have the timing chain on the back end of the engine. I don’t look forward to the day I need to service the timing set.

And as others have said, these are repairs after 100k, so what do the engineers care, they’ve done their job of it gets you that far along. They don’t give a crap about us shlubs who pick these up to drive after the warranty expires. And should they really?

You know what they say about cheap German cars.... there’s nothing quite as expensive.

Still, I’d rather endure the pain to not drive a Camry everyday, or some other soul sucking wheeled appliance.
