Kinja'd!!!

This would fit in the shed, it’s manual, and it’s from the 60s. That seems to be everything I’m looking for. Unless a good deal on an E30, E28, or manual 242 or 244 shows up.....

It’s just more than I’m wantitng to spend. But I’m looking at a Falcon wagon on the weekend that’s probably $5500, so my budget doesn’t seem to mean much anymore.

It’s the best looking Beetle for a reasonable price I’ve seen in a while, there’s nothing that looks better locally

Find an original ‘68-’69 engine cover to really clean up the looks. 1969 was a good year for beetles, lots of parts availability, and safety and handling improvements over previous years.

Looks pretty good. Although make sure your foot doesn’t go through the floor when you get in the car. Disclaimer: I have very bad rust nightmares about 60's Beetles. Also make sure there’s not a sheet of plywood under the car that’s stopping your foot from going through the floor.

I hope it’s solid. If so, please bring an 8-track with this song to play on your inaugural drive.

Kinja'd!!!

That is a bigger difference than I expected. I really prefer original steelies with hubcaps too.

Yeah my dad’s first car was a Beetle, he’s told me most areas to look out for when it comes to rust. That’s one of the main reasons I haven’t gotten one yet, I never had somewhere undercover to keep a car, and it’s hard to find a clean one for a decent price

You will enjoy this more than a 240/244. If the BMW’s are on your list, I don’t see why the Volvos are. The most enjoyable thing I’ve ever done with a Volvo is crush two.

‘68 and ‘69 are I think the cleanest looking years for the beetle, but ‘69 has the advantage of having independent rear suspension instead of the tail happy swing arm set up earlier years used.

If you’re serious about it, make sure you check the heater channels. They are prone to rusting terribly and it’s quite a job to replace that metal. Been there before and never hope to do it again.

$5500 for the Falcon? Even in Loonies, no.

That would be cool if it’s solid.

A ‘79 244 with a 4 speed, IPD lowering springs, chassis braces, thicker sway bars, and underhood braces, was one of the nicest driving cars I’ve ever tried out. Plus I had a ‘69 144S that I regret selling, but I can’t find another one that’s not super rusty or super expensive. Maybe it’s just me, but I love how the old RWD Volvos feel.

That said, if a good manual 533i or 535i showed up, I’d take that instead. I’ve also thought getting a Beetle would be cool though

That’s on my list of places to check for rust, I definitely don’t want to get into remotely serious rust repair

I have to find out for sure, that’s a price I’ve heard third hand, so it could be totally off. It seems steep for a 6 cylinder, even if it’s as good as it looks

A volvo 240 with crappy tires had laugh inducing oversteer at low speeds. What a turd of a car with the m47 and MA rust but it will be missed.

My dad had a 1970 forever - heat didn’t work, defroster didn’t work, washer fluid never worked, rust everywhere, but it ran. Not a bad little snow car too.

My friend’s dad had a ‘78 convertible as his daily driver from 1981 till 2005. It’s sitting in a garage now, waiting for his brother to restore it. Also my dad’s first car was a 65 or 66, part of my reason for wanting one

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)

I think it is at least 25% steep, even if the rest is nice. The small engine isn’t a positive, and I worry about the paint on the fenders - that’s a rust magnet, and if it doesn’t have any there yet, it will unless you do something about it. You’d want to budget for that immediately. It could be a nice car, but for the right price.

The Beetle looks like a very good deal at the price, if there’s no rot and no damage. You’d want to go over it very closely.

That’s pretty much what I’m thinking as well. Right now I’m giving the Beetle a lot of thought, but I won’t have a chance to see it till the weekend so hopefully no one buys it tomorrow. I’d definitely need to spend time being sure it’s not rusty in hidden places

Nice, check the usual spots, heaterchannels, floor pans, battery tray, and bulkheads inside the front and rear fenders.. it looks like a kids car, cal look. Hopefully it’s lowered properly.

69 is alright, not worth much but if it runs it could be fun. There is one here in town for $6500-

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/kamloops/1969-volkswagen-beetle-coupe-2-door/1234480559?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

it’s got clean pans and channels but rust holes behind the wheels.

Not sure though

It’d be a project for sure based on what he wrote. Sounded do-able though...a bit of a surprise and disappointment when he through in the towel, you know?

Hafta be reminded, it probably woild’ve seemed overwhelming to most of us in high school. Easy to forget how much we’ve learned since then, isn’t it?

For sure, it’s too bad, but I can relate to wanting something more predictable. I think if I was looking importing an e28, I’d get a euro one instead of an American one. A rust free California car would be nice, but oh man do the euro cars look good...

Totally, there are cars I’ve sold when I was younger that now I would’ve kept, but oh well. That’s how you gain experience

I’d want to to get it on a lift, or at least get under it. The Ford might be easier, as the rust nests on those (floors, rockers/sills etc) are easier to see.

So here’s all the areas I know of you should check for rust:

Heater channels (as mentioned)

Battery tray area and general floor pans

Behind running boards

Front shock towers and down low in the frunk

Package tray area

Right in front of rear tires

Front and rear crossmember

I guess just check the whole car :)
