And a coupe, too. Doesn’t have the cool rear roof like the sedans, but very cool. Sitting in a tow yard on Broad.

Looks clean. ‘59/60?

‘60, if I’m not mistaken.

You should buy it. Or a 928!

Think it’s a ‘60 Premiere. The Continentals all had that breezeway window. Looks to be in pretty good shape!

I would never be unhappy if I owned such a thing

100% original on the outside and inside. Factory wheels and tires.

Chingos of protective skid plates, reinforced shock towers and military grade bump stops.

Built K24 swap with a loud af exhaust.

I think you’re right. If I’m not mistaken all the sedans (except limos) had the reverse rear window, but I’ve seen pictures of coupes with both styles. It definitely looks decent, I want to try to find out more. It’s languishing in the back of a tow yard.

Looks too nice to be just sitting there like that! Those things are notorious for rusting quickly. They’re unibody, I think, and the unibodies of this era disintegrated pretty quickly.

This pig would need two K24s!

Alternatively, I would put a set of Moon caps on it then bag the shit out of this and park it on the ground.

Yep, which is why RamblinRover’s ‘59 has literally no rocker panels. I’ve learned from him that these have diabolically complex body structures. This is California though, so it’s possible it’s reasonably solid.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
02/16/2017 at 19:17, STARS: 1

A lot of cars from this era have some huge pitfalls that make restoration very costly relative to the value - from what I’ve read, this baby is one of the bigger offenders (both mechanical and body). Which is too bad, because it’s a really cool car.

Info: ‘tis a ‘60 Premiere two-door. It has the 430MEL, but since it’s a ‘60 it tragically only has a two-barrel (325 ghp). AKA, perfect candidate for a sixpack conversion. Also, being a ‘60, it has leaf spring rear suspension instead of coils.

02/16/2017 at 19:55, STARS: 0

No need for a K24, ‘mano. A six pack and compression boost on this can get you over 500 ft-lbs, even without a turbo or anything. Incidentally, I *will* take mine rallycrossing at least once, but not too often. Can’t burn up the $250 tires... unless you get a set of rallycross tires and a set of 5x5 rims. :)

02/16/2017 at 19:57, STARS: 1

I’m tooled up to fix my ‘59, but it’s a tricky fix. The other easy tell this is a Premiere and not a Conti, other than the breezeway window,is that the grill is all extended lozenges instead of squares.

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
02/16/2017 at 19:59, STARS: 2

Premiere and Landau Sedan/Capri had the wraparound rear glass regardless of configuration, Contis had the breezeway regardless of configuration, even in convertible (!).

And of course you happened to show me that spiffy six pack setup, damnit. Weird/Ford that they’d change the rear springing for a year before changing everything in ‘61. A little harder to put on bags.

02/16/2017 at 22:58, STARS: 0

Yep. The ‘59 was Jarod Rose’s, but he doesn’t have the ability to do a rocker rebuild (basically rebuilding a five-layer chassis on the side of the car O_O), so I decided it needed a rescue and bought it off him. It (looking somewhat moldered and very green) will show up in any web search for “59 lincoln capri”, because when he dug it out it did the rounds on teh interwebz.

02/16/2017 at 23:03, STARS: 0

I started trying to figure out what tires with a high enough load rating capable of rallycrossing properly would run, and... basically my eyes crossed. Would need to find a set of Lincoln/Ford truck old pattern wheels (5x5) and tires for those wheels capable of taking like 1800lb a corner - not really possible with anything grippy on the market I’m aware of, and even lower load rate options would need like a 19" super-wide wheel and tires costing an entire mortgage, more than even the giant whitewalls it runs stock.

So, balls to that, apparently. The best option is probably to get 16" wheels and shitty truck tires (that are radials) and just expect to have almost no control at all, but slightly more than stock. Slightly, and much cheaper to burn up.

Oh, I forgot to even mention - these things are as flat as a table underneath. The subframes are tucked all the way into the floor, and there is *nothing* sticking down. You can have these things safely so low it’s not even funny - I don’t know where you would even put skid plates. Maybe armor under the radiator ‘cause it’s kind of exposed, but the rest...

As for shock towers - the front fenders on these are permanent. They’re straight-up welded onto the firewall, everywhere, and the shock is set up on the subframe with both A-arms, not up in the fender. The setup is crazy strong. In the back, if you have a ‘58 or a ‘59 instead of a ‘60 you have trailing arms with coils, so it would be really easy to putt a watt’s link on instead of the original link. Stable as fuck.

I think I recall him posting pics around the time he decided to sell it, a year or so ago? Looked like it was a little rough but well worth saving.

Just thinking about that rocker rebuild gives me a headache. Good luck!

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
02/16/2017 at 23:33, STARS: 0

It’s the rockers on both sides (four new pieces of steel and a piece of angle each), some minor repair to the center seat box, repair to the front and rear torque boxes, and a couple spots in the floor. I’ve got all the steel folded for the rockers, the rest will have to be as-I-go. There’s also damage to the hood and tops of the front fenders, but that about does it as far as rust. Apart from one of the doors and... somewhere I can’t recall at the moment.

The engine is stuck, the brakes need total overhaul, and I need to have all four windows replaced. Past all that... we’ll see. Need new seat cloth, new headliner, new carpet, and I’ll be stunned if many of the electrical toys are working.

I just had the thought...  if this thing is actually used like that, how about body flex breaking the glass?

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
02/17/2017 at 00:43, STARS: 1

Naaah. The side glass is pretty much free-standing, and the rear glass is right over the torque boxes just as the front glass is over the front torque boxes and firewall. I don’t think the roof sail has enough rigidity of its own to resist twist, so the front and rear sections would mostly just do their own things, I would think, with nothing extra really asked of the glass. Plus, the glass itself is as thick as shit.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, there are a bunch of Imperial vs. competitor videos out there showing some pretty severe abuse on the Lincoln in stills and video - surprisingly not much indication of body flex, just shit for rear axle roadholding.

Kinja'd!!!

On a related note, late ‘50s Chrysler sales people were a pack of filthy liars.

02/17/2017 at 10:03, STARS: 0

Basically, the design plan on these was to have them as low as possible so that the elderly could get in and out - they also had bigger door apertures particularly in back than the Cadillacs or the Imperials - and part of that was making them completely flat underneath. They came within a hair of offering factory airbags in ‘58 and designed for it - that would have had them pretty much all the way on the ground when parked.

That’s fantastic. I never realized quite how... idontknowwhat the front of the Imperial looks from head on. It’s the 50's “Are you fucking kidding me” face. Having read your other comments about how flat the Lincoln floors are, I now really, really want this coupe to slam to the ground on airbags. AccuAir is less than a mile from where it sits.

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
02/17/2017 at 15:08, STARS: 0

The ‘60 Imperial is a weird one, and no question.

Kinja'd!!!

But yeah, you should totally at least find out asking on the Premiere. The air’s not quite as easy as on the ‘58 or ‘59 with coils, but would not be hard at all.

‘82 aircooled Vanagon GL, 4 speed, two tone blue. Bad rust in the nose panel and around some side glass, surface rust all over, I parked it because the engine smokes too badly to pass smog. The suspension is shot, etc. The transmission has never been gone through and has like 235k on it. etc etc etc
