YES! I’m a little rusty but I managed to make an entire hood from scratch. There were a few air bubbles that I sanded out and I still need to patch ‘em and put some reinforcement underneath. Best part? This thing only weighs 5 lbs versus the 40 lbs the original steel one weighed. I still got it

Kinja'd!!!

^ Original 40 lbs

Kinja'd!!!

^ Chopped off some subframe and drilled holes 35lbs

Kinja'd!!!

^ At 5 lbs right now. Awesomeness in its purest form!

That’s sick. I thought it was just scraping the paint off at first in which case you can expect the weight savings to continue as it rusts, but this is better.

I like how you take better care of your Chevy Beretta than most stance bros with their S13's

“Beretta Superleggera” has a nice ring to it.

What was your process for creating the hood? Did you use the original hood as a male mold and then skin it with the glass or did you overlay the hood with glass and then cut out the original steel leaving the steel frame surround?

This whole project is awesome & this hood in particular is the best.

You have a write-up on making this? I dabbled in vac forming fiberglass in college & it was a ton of fun.

Did you reuse the old hood skeleton for bracing under the skin?

I am curious as well. The fit looks pretty good.

Kinja'd!!!

I used the OEM hood as my plug, but I wrapped it with wax paper so the glass wouldn’t stick to it. From there it’s just basic fiberglassing with it. I put two layers on top, separated it from the plug (came off very easily) and am probably going to put a layer underneath with minimal lightweight aluminum brackets as core support.

You have put so much effort into this thing. I almost wish you had started with a better car. It’s nice to see someone else trying to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse.

Parts aren’t easy to find sometimes for this car so I HAVE to take good care of it while finding that balance of thrashing it at autoX . Also looking at your avatar reminds me that I really need to finish that anime, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun...

The Beretta used to be my high school car back in the day, so I bought this one 7 years ago to relieve that sentimental value that I had for these things. It’s probably the one thing I can never part with lol

Now if only I can put a bigger motor and call it the “Beretta Superveloce!”

In the future if you want a smoother finish for the top surface you could try covering the wet glass with wax paper and smoothing it out. Make sure you coat the finished product so UV rays don’t degrade the resin. I do a huge amount of carbon fiber/glass construction if you have any questions about processes. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQff-Rd2xvYfx-HHKCbmq9A This is a great youtube channel if you’re into that kind of stuff

Do you mind if I ask how much that cost? It would be fun to do the same for my Galant, maybe even try to integrate some sweet heat extractors over the turbo.
