I got mine a valve cover gasket, spark plugs and wires, and a new set of Silverstar Ultra high and low beams.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, here’s a dumb thing that happened today: I had bought oil and a filter and dropped the Cruiser off at my mechanic to get that changed. When I picked it up, I saw that his guy didn’t use my oil or filter, but they still only charged me like $30 for 8 or so quarts and a filter. Conventional oil, I’m sure, but it’ll due until next week when I do the valve cover gasket...then I’ll drain it and fill it with Rotella T6 (apparently highly recommended for these, also on sale for $18 a gallon at Advance) and a K&N oil filter (because I’m a simpleton and can’t not buy the most expensive oil filter available).

In the next two months or so I’ve got about a $1000 bonus coming, I’m thinking either a 2.5 inch lift or getting all the (still very minor) rust repaired on the body. Lift is winning, because lift.

I got her a sterling silver ring with an engraving of the coordinates of the exact place I proposed to her. It didn’t come in time for today though. :(

But we resolved it, so it got better! We’ll probably watch some Netflix later.

I run Rotella T6 5w40 in both the Niva and MJ. The ZDDP content in modern diesel oils is very similar to that of gasoline oils from the 80's and early 90's, ZDDP being a zinc compound used as an anti-wear agent necessary to preserve the bearing surface materials used in engines of that vintage. However the trace amounts of zinc that end up in the exhaust will deposit on your catalytic converter (the same way lead in TEL-laced gas does, just in much smaller quantities) and reduce its effectiveness. If emissions are a concern to you, high ZDDP oils may not be the best idea.

Also since you mention filters, the filter for a Jeep 4.0 HO fits great on the Niva. When I had to chance my oil in Asheville at midnight I stopped into a Walmart and picked up done Rotella, then when faced with a couple brands of filter I wasn’t entirely familiar with (my preference being the Mobil-1) I emerged with the only other brand I recognized as trustworthy. So yes, now my Lada has a Mopar filter on it. Lol.

But back on point, I attempted (and yet again was stymied) to locate a new rear door for the MJ’s topper (I’m not convinced the “only person who knows about toppers” at the only semi-local place that deals with them even exists, let alone works there, I’ve now got my third time and date to call him...) and also was stymied in my attempt to order new springs for the MJ, in this case by a spotty cellular network.

Fixing it is good. My wife and I generally agree that there’s not much worth fighting over...we’re both good at recognizing when something is more important to the other, so we hardly ever fight.

Depending on how my wallet’s feeling at the time I might switch out to the 15w40 conventional in the summer, but never in the winter... Unless I forget like I did this year. There’s a noticeable difference in starting the 4.0 at -40...

I bet there is at those temps. My truck has never seen a temperature colder than -6, and that was a once or twice in a century weather event for Southern New Mexico back in 2011. In a normal winter, it never sees a cold start below +20 degrees. Even then, I don’t drive it more than once a week. If I were doing cold weather starts on a regular basis, I would pick something synthetic and/or lighter weight.

Thanks to the LeMons Ralky, my MJ has been exposed to both 115°F in Death Valley and -45°F in my driveway, in the last six months. It’s crazy the environmental extremes this old beast will tolerate.
