Just goes to show you can still score big at the Goodwill. I scored a Definitive Mythos 3 center speaker for $20. Originally my research suggests it retailed $500 (I saw one on sale for $250 online).

I got a pair of ordinary Logitech computer speakers from Goodwill a couple of years ago for $6. They’re great speakers and they still work!

I hear all these amazing good will stories, then go to mine where they charge $25 for a bag with 10 beat up Hot Wheels and still ask $50 for giant tube TVs.

That’s definitely one of the better finds I’ve seen. I think the problem with most goodwill’s is that now that they have an online site, their workers are becoming more educated in what’s worth money.

Nice find! I have a bit of a speaker and Goodwill (outlet) addiction. Here are some of my finds:

1) Today I found a Polk Audio center channel speaker. Nothing as good as your center channel speaker, but I love the various Polks I have around the house so I figure that this one will be pretty good.

2) Last week it was a nearly complete Logitech Z-680 5.1 set. A couple of grills are missing, but the speakers look pretty cool without them, like the front of a jet engine. I didn’t search for the remote control because I didn’t know the set was supposed to have one. Cool controller, and it’s THX certified. A replacement remote will probably cost more than what I paid for the full set, and the remote sells for less than $30. It was a $400 set 14 years ago.

3) I found a pair of Niles Audio OS6.3 outdoor speakers. They look a little beat, but sound good

4) A pair of Mission bookshelf speakers. I forget the model, but they too sound quite sweet.

5) A pair of Realistic Minimus-7s with some sort of aftermarket modification (I forget what it’s called, but there’s a sticker on it advertising the fact)

I haven’t used the stereo in my living room in some time, but the speakers I have hooked up to it include a set of Tannoy Optimus-1s that my dad bought new back in 1968; I still have the original sales brochure. For surround I use some speakers out of Canada from Energy; I got three satellites and the center channel speaker for about $30 as clearance at a retail store; one of the satellites was missing so they sold the rest of the set for next to nothing.

(My Tannoys are in better shape, although there are some rings from some asshole that left a cold drink on top without a coaster - grrrrrr...)

What I need to find now is a proper replacement tweeter for one of the Polks. I got the bookshelf Polks at an electronics swap meet for about $20 because one of the grilles was missing. I don’t care about grilles.

That’s a lot healthier than the automotive equivalent;)

What kind of speaker are those tannoys? Dipole?

I don’t have a garage or carport, so my vices need to remain indoors. Between computers and vintage audio gear my place is a tad full...

Snagged a Bose home theatre set up missing the controller part for 40 bucks about a year ago. Got a controller from Ebay for another 30 and have the loudest Forza set up on the block!

Impressive snags there though! Wish I knew more than Polk and Bose are good as far as audio goes.

Oh man, audio equipment is a deep dark hole you may never recover from. There are a lot of things involved and brands to be aware of. If you are ever interested let me know. I spent the greater part of three years researchering and I’m not done yet.

I always make a B-line for the electronics at the thrift store. Makes for a great museum visit, if nothing else.

Cerwin Vega, Onkyo...

I inherited four Cerwin Vega bookshelf speakers from a friend some years back and I use them in my classroom with a low-end Onkyo receiver. They sound great . I grew up with bookshelf speakers and I prefer them to this surround sound stuff nowadays.

I like that system you have, but my complaint with virtually all speaker systems for PCs is that they almost never have tweeters. And you can tell.

Not a lot to tell, just that I have four Cerwin Vega speakers that I inherited from a friend, and a low-end Onkyo receiver that used to be in my living room. I have the speakers in the four corners of my classroom and they sound quite good, especially when it’s time to show a movie.
