“powered by Subaru” is also likely a lie. EDIT: maybe not!

I just assumed they would have rebadged a small engines from someone else but nope.

I assume it’s a continuation of Fuji Heavy Industries industrial motors under another name - a.k.a. what used to be a Robin.

No, you can buy just the engines. I thought there was more selection here but still:

It’s what comes of Subaru being Fuji Heavy Industries, with other areas of sales than cars.

-Electric start (on a 190cc, mind you.)

If you can’t handle the strenuous task of pull-starting a 190cc, you can’t handle the strenuous task of pressure washing.

I still think they are rebranded, but its only a hunch. They look like Kohler engines.

Also Ford branded Generators. Not a PowerStroke though :P

I just hope they’ve stepped up their quality game, because I have worked on some real stinkers that were Robin. Admittedly one of said stinkers was “only” worn out, in the way that the valve clearances had closed up and the intake wasn’t sealing. Oh, and then there was the part where it threw a rod, close enough to my face that there were aluminum flakes and oil in my hair. That was fun.

I don’t think so. I used to work on Robins from time to time.

No reason to rebadge someone else’s small motor when you’ve got your own division.

Remember the ‘03 blackout? My dad bought a Robin-powered generator in that.

Try as he might he couldn’t get it going... until the power came back on. Just refused to start. Don’t know what was wrong, it worked fine afterwards. But when we needed it... nope.

There’s one excuse for having electric start on a motor that small, and that’s if it’s on a snowblower. A real got-to-start kind of scenario where it might be a little old lady.

Obv. electric start is just fine on a riding mower, but one ought to have more than a 5hp rider.

That’s sounds like a real table-flip on Robins, to be sure.

I think the shift may be part of realizing that Robin’s name is generally mud - or at least it’s not a name that *helps* sell the motor as much as just vanilla recognition as “Subaru”.

Subaru small engines are actually generally excellent. Sometimes badged as Robins, really high quality motors.

The old Fuji Robins with cone-shaped foam pre-filtered air filters and goofy tall shielded exhausts, sometimes with some kind of weird flocking (?!) were not my favorite engines ever. The carbs could *not* tolerate sitting, the kill switches, the filter, the tank, pretty much everything outside of the engine I was not a fan of. Insides, no special complaints except the one that tried to take my head off when it threw a rod.

I’ve heard more positive things about newer ones that were not those.

Mainly, the old ones resembled somebody trying to build to the feature set of a Honda industrial on the cheap... or something. Just weird.

I’ve heard good things about very old Robins. I’ve heard good things about more recent Robins. The ones I came to be familiar with, not a fan.

Ours needed fuel lines & new gaskets 3 years ago. It also just turned 15. Apart from that it has been very reliable.

The ones I worked on were back around 2006, and were already probably 10-15 years old or more at that time. They’d mostly seen rental service, and were either low hours from being on uncommon-use equipment or medium-high hours from running on normal equipment just long enough to start getting dodgy. They had been perfectly serviceable at one time, but they had neither the innate simplicity/stupidity/hit it with a hammer qualities of Briggs engines of comparable age, nor the mystical resistance to trouble of their Honda GX counterparts. Weirdly designed parts, carb erraticness, and just a general parts aesthetic that I couldn’t get down with.
