Used struts?

Kinja'd!!!

Thinking of buying these used Tokico D-spec struts and prodrive springs for under $300 for my WRX wagon. Unknown mileage has me a bit worried on wasting money but from the photo they appear to be in decent shape. Is there a good way to check their condition with springs on and not mounted on the car?

Are they gas shocks? It would be hard to test out gas shocks with the springs on there. With fluid filled shocks you can look for leaks.

I’ve made worse purchases lol.

I once bought three used (with 30k) iridium spark plugs in case of emergency for $6.

...I ended up swapping them into Tucker and driving on them for 100k. *shrug*

Not really. I’d want to test the struts and see how they rebound.

Just check for the obvious leaking, check under the boots for rust from rubbing against the boot and look for areas that have been recently cleaned off (sign of leaks). If they look fine they most likely are...but that doesn’t mean they will stay that way for long.

I would in theory be open to buying used shocks if I knew their age and mileage.

That’s definitely my concern. Plus I am waiting to do a bunch of control arm and trailing arm bushings at once so I may just save up and buy new ones that I know will last

I think they are fluid but not 100%

That was my concern. I’ll probably pass on these.

The good news is that strut work on impreza platforms is stupid easy, so the actual work isn’t a big deal. Maybe see if you can talk him down and run with it until it blows up while you are saving for nicer stuff.

Are the struts rebuildable?

Nope. Makes me want to stay away even more

Yeah fuck that then. Unless springs/hardware are worth at least $300.

I don’t think Tokico D’s are really even worth that risk....if the were ohlins or somthing hell yeah...but then they’d also be rebuildable.

If they’re fluid you’ll be able to see or smell leaks. If there are no leaks you should be gtg.
