Of all the stuff that will kill you in AZ, from plants to animals to the sun to lack of water, I fear snakes the most. Probably because most of my AZ hiking has been off-trail bushwhacking and scrambling with no cell service.

To answer the question about not being able to find a Scorpion, an acceptable substitution is if you see someone getting a drink at a drinking fountain, stick your head in front of theirs and drink first.

Rattlers will do their best to avoid you, and make a lot of noise so you can avoid them, but they are also the only thing I’m always nervous about coming in contact with while hiking, especially with my kids. I live for the day when I finally get to see a mountain lion. But no fucking way do I want to get bit by a rattlesnake.

Looks awesome! I was just out in Phoenix area, we went to the Tom’s Thumb trail and hiked. Was there to visit a college friend. It also happened to be the weekend of the WM Open, we mainly went to have some drinks and to people watch, it was excellent.

Down South, there’s sort of an old joke about rattlesnakes being no worry because at least they try to avoid you and have an audible warning. Moccasins and Copperheads are silent AND aggressive. I hate those things. I have literally seen a juvenile copperhead (2' long) stand its ground against 4 adult men, then advance on them. It wasn’t even defending its den, just out in the open.

You mean the team that built a new arena in Glendale in 2003, yet has been in the bottom-3 in attendance on an annual basis? The one who Glendale tried to shove out the door a couple years ago and are currently looking for a place to play? If ownership were smart, they would have left years ago; sadly, incompetence isn’t a strong enough word for whatever it is they’re doing.
