Some times the most exciting CL finds are the cars you’ve never even heard off. So here’s one I didn’t know of. A 1972 VW 411. For the low low price of 500 bucks!

I don’t know anything about this car, so I’m off to do some research! Yes. I’m guessing it’s a Brazilian VW, it certainly has the look of one.

Torch would have an aneurysm if he saw this.

Amazing that it survived, not Brazilian. If I recall correctly, these weren’t known to be VW’s pinnacle of engineering.

That is so cool. I love the front end. It kinda looks like what a chevette would have looked like if the Germans had designed it.

It’s like a German Corvair!

Maybe what a Chevette would have been if the Corvair had been a success.

Ikr I told my Bro in law to buy it bc he’s a VW fan. He said he already has too many projects. Darn him and his logic.

Nope, not Brazilian. The Type 4 was Volkswagen’s attempt to make a “proper car”, primarily geared toward Americans - especially Americans that might have had a Beetle when they were younger, but were now responsible young adults with good jobs and new families. They were big (for a VW), fairly plush (for a VW) and offered *gasp* a full automatic transmission as an option. But, it was the last gasp for air cooled, rear engine/RWD Volkswagens. By then, they had bought Auto Union and were well on their way to a FWD future. The disappointing sales of the Type 4 only served to confirm the conviction of those within the company that believed the air cooled era was ending.

The front end mad shaper design made me think VW Brazil. It must have been a real flop if I’ve never heard of it. You can regularly find old VWs on CL around me, Beetles, Types 3s, Ghias, even busses of various value. But this was totally new to me.

I actually did laugh out loud.

Yep, it resembles the Brasilia, which I think is a little smaller. There was also a VW 412, which has lights lower on the front clip than the 411. They were sold in the US for a few years, replaced by the Dasher (Passat elsewhere). This is the ancestor of the Passat of today. I have to imagine survival rates on this car are minuscule. Buy it :)

No that’s a Karman Ghia... I prefer to remember the Corvair only as a two door.

Yeah the Wiki says only 117,000 sold in the US, so about 50,000 sold in 72. It’s rare for sure, but I’m having a hard enough time keeping my Galant on the road. And it’s even rarer!

Kinja'd!!! "Berang" (berang)

Yes, very rare. This was when VW had pushed their rear-engined, air-cooled agenda as far as they could and the public just wasn’t interested anymore. There’s one in a junkyard locally in case you buy it and need parts.

The engines are far superior to the Type I,II,III engines. There was a bit of a movement in the VW scene as bases for turbo builds. I myself as a young fellow was considering one, but went the conventional route instead.

I’d buy it and a Beetle and swap the engine into the Beetle, I guess is my answer.

I am surprised so many sold - I might see one every several years at most, compared rarer cars which are seen more often. I suspect by 1990 most of them were long gone.

You wouldn’t have to worry about keeping this on the road, as getting it there in the first place would be a labor of love. Damn good parts car, at the very least.

That was new info re upgraded engine from Type III’s

My grandfather actually had the station wagon version...damn, I was a little kid when he had it but the sound of that super-smooth air-cooled (boxer?) 4 lives in memory to this day...at the time I didn’t even understand how exceptional that sound was haha

Best wishes if you buy it...if not rusty on the underside looks like it has potential

I wish I could buy it. I even if I could scrap up the 500 bucks with out my wife noticing, I doubt I could get it drivable with spending a lot more.
