So for the last few weeks there has been this blue and white twin engine plane doing SUPER low flights (as in, 1000 feet off the ground it seems) over my house...like twice and day and a few more at night. I was starting to get pretty upset about it. Turns out its this guy
Its a NOAA De Havilland DHC-6-300 Twin Otter sniffing around the air trying to make a detailed map of why our air quality is so bad. I guess its good that they are looking into it and it sure makes it less annoying.
Whatever they can do to figure out how to clean up the winter inversions a bit would be nice
So far the theories I hear at that its mostly car related, or mostly wood burning related. Its mostly Ammonium Nitrate which is formed from Sulfur dioxide or Oxides of nitrogen. I guess I have my fair share of that smog then. Thanks NOX BOX!

You can’t stop the inversions, but you can stop pumping shit into the atmosphere that gets trapped by inversions. My dad grew up in Somerset, PA, about 60 miles from Pittsburgh. He used to tell us about the inversions over Pittsburgh, when all the crap from the steel mills would get trapped. Pretty bad stuff.

Yeah, the crazy thing is that despite Utah having some of the worst winter air in the country this is the first time anyone has bothered to actually go up and find out what it is. There have been ground studies for YEARS but no one has collected data from within the boundary area. It’s been hard for people to pin down the exact things that need to be done to help clean it up. People are saying that its mostly cars, but my on again off again research into the subject suggests thats just a likely guess, not actual conclusive data. The key culprits, as I mentioned, are organic particle emissions...which could be cars, industry, residential wood burning or even road salt. Frankly, I’m hoping for road salt so they can ban that stuff.
Whats interesting is that sulfates which were the big “acid rain” issue from the past that have been reduced significantly may actually INCREASE the problem as it increases the free ammonia in the atmosphere to bind with particulates to form the bulk of the problem.

smog test all the diesels.
Also I live on a mountain and planes dont like flying in between the two mountain ranges and so they end up much closer to the neighborhood and are much louder. It sucks living in a quiet place only to be buzzed by helicopters and planes in addition to the trains that come by a ways away that blow their horns at crossings that arent really even crossings.
