Telescoping ladder - how bad will it be?

I bought a telescoping ladder today because I occasionally need to reach tall places in my house. I don’t want to store a massive ladder or spend a couple hundred bucks on a little giant. I predict using it somewhere in the range of twice a year. When it does break I won’t remember how long ago I bought it simply because I won’t use it that much.

Edit: forgot to include: I paid $85 for what will extend to be a 12.5' ladder, this is where I’m questioning quality.

With that said, how mediocre do you think this ladder will be?

I had a home inspector use one of those because it was easy to car through a house. Seemed to work well for him. I’ve found the Little Giant ladders to be quite fantastic for my uses though.

I doubt you’ll be able to see far with-

Oh, ladder .

Eh, it’ll be fine enough.

the little giant seems like a good ask for it as a gift kind of item.

They’re pricy and limited in what they can do, but home inspectors love them. There aren’t many ladders you can carry around in one hand, all through a house, and not damage the walls and ceilings along the way.

That is cool, how much? I’ve got a little giant, but even it is kind of bulky for indoor use.

$85 - forgot to include that in the post. The cheapness is what leads me to believe it’s going to okay at best. However the ones that were $150+ have the same pictures and description, just different “brand” before the word ladder in the title.

Get it at a store, or via the worldwideweb? I wanna try one first.

I’m not a home inspector but wouldn’t a little 4ft fiberglass ladder do the trick?

Think about needing to get into attic access in a garage ceiling, things like that. With one of these, you can just bring it inside and carry it around easily, but access things 12'-15' up in the air if needed. You can also get on the roof with them, which is virtually impossible with most A-frame ladders.

Handy but heavy, and will pinch you good if you’re not careful while lowering it.

They’re especially great if you need to throw it in the trunk and take it somewhere, or if storage space is limited around the house.

Amazon, figure if it’s too bad it’s an easy return. Reasonable reviews. I’m a touch over half of it’s rated 330 lbs limit so hopefully no problems.

I can see me pinching my hands even being aware that it will do that, thanks for the heads up!

Disclosure: I have zero experience with any of these, just going off of my hunches.

I’d think they’d be find if you are doing straight up and down climbing on even surfaces. I’d think these would have fine stability as long as the weight is going straight down the telescoping tube, but would start to get squirrely if you are extending outside the ladder frame. As in, climb up to the roof? No problem. Lean out to clean the gutter and start to put more weight on one side? Maybe not so much.

I recently dealt with a home inspector who used one of these. Seemed to work pretty well for him.

Nice, everything that I have tried to return via Amazon, they have just refunded me for without asking for the product back! I’ve got a free dash cam because the wifi part of it stopped working!

They negotiated with me when I bought something from their warehouse (used) section and what I got was more messed up than they listed it as. I was happy, they still got some money. All was good.

They really are great with the customer service

that sounds pretty reasonable. On other version of what looks to be the same ladder, some complained about one side of the other not working as well and I would guess it is in the situation you just described.

I’ve actually used one before for lack of a better ladder available in an emergency. They work, just send the lightest guy up just in case and they’re on the heavy side which makes them feel more sturdy. If you’re using it for just climbing onto something it’s okay.

If you’re trying to prune, clean gutters, or even lower something, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s not stable compared to a quality ladder but have someone heavier hold the bottom.

Please do. I could use a basic extension ladder in my home, but don’t necessarily have room to store one. Which is probably the raison d’être of this thing.

This makes me cringe... I’m on ladders year round for work and constant home improvement, ranging from 6 ft steps to 50 ft fiberglass monsters. A 16ft aluminum ladder might be worth looking into. Longer lasting, much faster to deploy, and a lot safer. Still super light and easily maneuverable (obviously not this much but hey, tradeoffs and whatnot).

mentally noted. My use will be change a light bulb, dust some cob webs the extension couldn’t reach, etc. Short and quick for the most part. I will have to make sure it’s positioned well for the light bulb changes.

Overall design or the cheapness?

I feel like if I had to use this daily, I would find an alternative. Though from other comments it sounds like home inspectors use them regularly.
Unrelated, a 50 foot ladder would probably make me wet my pants.

I’ll follow up with how “safe” it feels once I get it.

They work great, use one every week. Just treat its load rating and be mindful of bracing it like any other ladder and you’re set.

50 ft is absolutely terrible. Hell, a 40 ft fiberglass extension ladder takes two guys and is still difficult to manage.

The foot design worries me a bit, but if used primarily indoors and kept moderately close to the wall I’m sure it will be fine. If grip on hard surfaces is ever an issue, get a cheap yoga mat and set the feet on that. Extension ladders are nice because you can flip the feet to dig into dirt, grass, etc. And have zero worries about sliding no matter how far back you set the feet.

Just make sure to double check that everything’s locked in place. I’ve yet to see an accident due to hardware failure on, they’ve all been people rushing jobs and being careless.
